How does a civilian airline pilot know he has missles inbound? Does the plane he is flying have missle lock detection equipment on board? Does it also have missle avoidance tech? What type of civilian airliner are we talking about?

I know planes have avoidance systems for other aircraft..maybe it got set off by incoming missile?

Assuming this is the rebels, it basically ends the already slim chance of any intervention. Short of gassing Turkey Assad can do what the fuck he likes now.

Of course if it's Assad then he's signed his own death warrant.

It's also possible they got missile warning systems after 9/11, but I doubt they'd want to admit that.

Well, it's not Assad - Russia is his biggest ally - his lifeline. Holy crap, this is unbelievable. I think TPTB are getting desperate - perhaps an attempt to move the Russian people to decry Putin's support for Assad?

Two missiles were fired at a Russian passenger plane flying over Syrian territory with 200 people onboard, an informed source in Moscow told Interfax news agency. The source of the attack remains unknown.

“Syrian [officials] informed us that on Monday morning, unidentified forces launched two ground-to-air missiles which exploded in the air very close to a civilian aircraft belonging to a Russian airline,” the source told the Russian agency.

The pilots managed to maneuver the plane in time however, “saving the lives of passengers.”

It is believed the aircraft was intentionally targeted in the attempted strike, “but it remains unclear whether the attackers knew whether it was Russian or not,” the source added.

The passenger plane was en route to Russia after departing from an unspecified resort city in Egypt at the time of the reported attack.

So far, the incident has not been officially confirmed. Russia's embassy in Damascus is looking into the report of the attack on the Russian passenger plane, RT has been told.

russia will start sending fighter aircraft escorts alongside its passenger planes if this shit happens again.. that way if a missile is fired at the passenger plane, bye bye whoever fired it.

Agreed, but the people funding the rebels have proven they would gleefully shoot down a passenger plane and let someone else take the blame.

What are the chances that some person was sitting, watching flight info, waiting for a Russian plane. Probably was looking to take out any plane and "oops, it was Russia".

But who else would take the blame? Assad isn't going to shoot at a Russian passenger plane.

Syria may be at war, but there are still domestic and international flights throughout the country. Not nearly as many, but they do operate. Not saying it is a smart thing, bit it is business as usual for many people in that part of the world.

It's especially dangerous in that part of the world given that terrorists will pretty much kill anything and anyone without regard.

Attitude Protection
Pitch limited to 30 deg up, 15 deg down, and 67 deg of bank.
These limits are indicated by green = signs on the PFD.
Bank angles in excess of 33 deg require constant sidestick input.
If input is released the aircraft returns to and maintains 33 deg of bank.

High Angle of Attack Protection (alpha):
When alpha exceeds alpha prot, elevator control switches to alpha protection mode in which angle of attack is proportional to sidestick deflection.
Alpha max will not be exceeded even if the pilot applies full aft deflection

High Speed Protection:
Prevents exceeding VMO or MMO by introducing a pitch up load factor demand.
The pilot can NOT override the pitch up command.
