ehecatl User ID: 39170042 Mexico 05/01/2013 10:48 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | U.S. Army Sgt. John Hartley Robertson even has a Vietnamese wife and can no longer speak English. Quoting: UTownTrash Would someone actually forget how to speak their first language? It seems like that would stick with you no matter what. My ex-wife from east europe started commenting about how she was losing her native language after about 3 years in the US with total immersion in english. My first 3 years in Mexico I was totally immersed in spanish and did not meet any english speaking person in that time, and by that time was thoroughly thinking, dreaming, etc. in spanish. Then I started to meet up with a few english speaking people at times, and it was rather difficult for me to switch back to english. Blogging in english has helped but perhaps writing uses a different part of the brain than speaking english. If I'm not blogging, I still am thinking naturally in spanish, although english is supposedly my first and only language for 40 years. It is a little difficult for me now to have to speak in english, although I can, but that requires thinking in english first to be really fluent, and since I am so used to thinking in spanish, I find myself when speaking english to first think the thought in spanish and then having to translate, which is not nearly as easy as speaking the language where your thoughts arise from. If you don't use your native language, you lose it after a number of years. |

Our oldest is in the Army now, and I tell you that I am ashamed to say that I didn't know this. I had no idea that we left men behind, purposely. I see POW flags, and I vaguely recognized that there were perhaps still troops that are still POWs, but this story has now brought this to the forefront of my mind, and it makes me incredibly sad. I pray everyday for the release of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, and I will now add to those prayers any others who may still be alive in situations such as the article describes. And, to know that our Country had any 'purpose' to leaving these Vietnam Vets behind, makes me ashamed and angry. I need to educate myself more on this issue. :( |

Many, many others as well. Quoting: GUAM USA All it takes to forget who you are is the right brain injury. So this is theoretically possible. If he had meningitis while in captivity (common in Southeast Asia) that might be an infectious cause of memory loss: [link to www.merckmanuals.com] I always heard that some men just walked off into the Jungle and never came back. After a "dear john" letter or news of a dead parent of dead child. Then they went to live up a tree somewhere away from the fighting. Like crazy street guys, only still in SE Asia. There is a national geographic article from the 70's which references mentions a sighting of some european looking guy hiding in the woods. Goes to look for it... Or, complete immersion for 4 decades. That'll do it. McCain had fellow pilots he was locked up with to keep him grounded. Sounds like this guy just had the jungle and finally and hot asian wife to live with. "Big wooly mammoth gonna wear my coat in the middle of the summertime" |

How do these people live with themselves? Well, I know how McCain does it. The gooks broke him. He's a traitor. He's no war hero. He gave up everything to Charlie. Quite true. When someone has been exposed to such extreme torture or mind altering situation, they are no longer able to think or behave normally. Extreme torture breaks a person down. And the method is the favorite way to rebuild someone's mind. POWs may be considered "heroes".. But the very fact they were POWs should automatically exclude them from politics or govt service. McCain's actions have clearly proven he is controlled and controllable. I suspect the "break down" of torture has made him an empty puppet. . |

I've also traveled to 60 of Vietnam's 64 provinces and talked with lots of folk in these places, both lowlanders and Montagnards, who have relevant information about U.S. serviceman who got stuck in Vietnam and Laos after Saigon fell in 1975. The war ended in 1974, 39 years ago, that's a lot of time to forget when all you hear around you is the native tongue. - When learning a foreign language through the word-translation method (learning that "chien"means dog in French) and relying on a language dictionary, the mind processes the language through the native tongue. Without constant practice, it is very easy to forget the foreign language since its a two-stepped process). This is why high school French is forgotten shortly after graduation. - However, learning a foreign language through an immersion method (associating the foreign word with the visual object, such as foreign language abroad courses, or even Rosetta Stone) allows the brain to associate via the natural method of language learning...and will retain the foreign language much longer with less practice. My guess, is this man's brain was re-wired for the Vietnamese language. Yet if he spent a few weeks or months in the west, his English would return. It reminds me of how Madonna, spent a few years in the UK and now has a British accent. She claims she has to make an effort to speak without the accent |
