The war ended in 1974, 39 years ago, that's a lot of time to forget when all you hear around you is the native tongue. - When learning a foreign language through the word-translation method (learning that "chien"means dog in French) and relying on a language dictionary, the mind processes the language through the native tongue. Without constant practice, it is very easy to forget the foreign language since its a two-stepped process). This is why high school French is forgotten shortly after graduation. - However, learning a foreign language through an immersion method (associating the foreign word with the visual object, such as foreign language abroad courses, or even Rosetta Stone) allows the brain to associate via the natural method of language learning...and will retain the foreign language much longer with less practice. My guess, is this man's brain was re-wired for the Vietnamese language. Yet if he spent a few weeks or months in the west, his English would return. It reminds me of how Madonna, spent a few years in the UK and now has a British accent. She claims she has to make an effort to speak without the accent
