A fun message displayed in the bus tunnel last week
OK I wasn't going to post this but it is just too cool to ignore any longer, I have to tell someone.

I was on the bus riding from school to downtown Seattle about a week ago. I was just going about my business, enjoying myself, noticing how every person was so singularly focused on one thing (phone, book, newspaper, etc etc.

The bus I take drops me off in a tunnel downtown, and I walk up several flights of stairs to get up to the street.

There is a sign in the tunnel that displays messages by illuminating little red dots on an otherwise black background. The sign usually says things like "Please stay behind the yellow textured line" or "the next northbound train will be arriving in two minutes" or "routes 32 34 and 67 are temporarily out of service due to road construction", things of that nature.

Well this time, I felt a strange impulse to just watch the sign for a little bit, I can't explain I just knew I should. I saw it display a normal message, and as I was about to turn to go something strange happened.

First of all, I have never seen the sign display in any language other than english. But as I watched, the words "Emociones impura" appeared on the screen. About three seconds later these words disappeared and were replaced by "Extermina los suenos".

I was in absolute shock. This translates to "Impure emotions. Exterminate the dreams." wtf

I stared as it went back to a normal message, and then walked away, kind of laughing, kind of in awe, and certainly perplexed.

What an experience! Anyone else have a similar story?

As a bloke who used to work with those types of signs, I can say with probably 99% accuracy that the dude/person who last worked on/set up the system was a bit bored, and programmed joke messages while they were testing the system.

Kinda like: You just won the minor Jackpot of $5.42! You are a total loser!!!

Add in tri-colour effects and whatever (graphics), maybe also trigger a strobe light/rotating beacon/siren.

I used to do it all the time in pubs and clubs - the trick is to remember to delete the test messages before you leave, otherwise you're in the crap when your boss gets an irate phone call.
