John prophesied Jesus and recognised him when others didn't. Dunno about the water baptism thing, there's many forms of baptism besides water.

John the Baptist was forerunner of Jesus. John's baptism was forerunner of Christian baptism. If you will read the scripture it said Jesus did this to fulfill all righteousness. So this baptism was forerunner of baptism that came later Acts 2:38 complete with the gift of the Holy Spirit who appeared as a dove after Jesus baptism. The scripture says we are "baptized into Christ", in it we "put on Christ" and Romans says we are buried with him in baptism and raised to walk in a new life.
Don't take my word for it read the account in Acts of Philip and the Ethiopian and see if they do not follow this pattern including going into the water (so it is literal burial in water, some claim it is not).
Also understand that when one is Baptized that God does the work on the one being baptized. We are not working, we are obeying (Colossians chapter 2)
