Is it safe to drive my car with a bad catalytic converter?
I have a 2003 Saturn L200 that started making rattling noises. A mechanic buddy of mine took a look and said the catalytic converter is bad and has broken pieces inside.

He didn't seem too worried and said that eventually the broken pieces rattling around will just exit out of the exhaust system.

A new converter will ring me $1200, at that price i'd rather just buy a new car. Other than the annoying rattling sound my car is running great.

Is this safe?

Yes.....If the car starts loosing power you should get it replaced....Could cause motor problems or fires .....Due to extreme back pressure on the exhaust....

Unless you live in an area where you have to have your emissions tested, you will be fine.m

the main function of a catalytic converter is to reduce the pollution the car emits. you will never pass a E-test without it.

It will damage the engine. The "Cat" is a honey comb design. When it breaks apart, it will lodge side ways...meaning the exhaust can't flow through it, causing back pressure. Over a prolonged period, it will cause damage.

as long as it isn't clogged up, back pressure and a fire hazard, drive it to another shop. get it done way cheaper.
isn't $1200 the book value of the car?

Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold.

Problem with back flow solved, and you will alert passerby to your presence more efficiently, reducing chance for accidents to occur.

That's how I roll every day. Because fuck the EPA

Go buy one at an auto parts store for about $100 and bring it to a muffler shop and they will install it for less than $100. I just had to do it to pass an emissions test.

Pound a piece of rebar from the exhaust end towards the engine. This will bust up the plugged up honeycomb interior of your converter. You will now get better mileage and engine will run better.

Rhodium is the most expensive metal in the world and its in your catalytic converter, Platinum the second most expensive metal is also in your catalytic converter, Palladium the 7th most expensive metal is also in your catalytic converter.

I smell engine exhaust conspiracy. And it stinks like petrol.

Re: Is it safe to drive my car with a bad catalytic converter?
The only real danger is like people have said with regards to it breaking apart and clogging. Specifically it is because it will get much much hotter than it would normally due to all the back pressure and poor flow. I've seen them get so hot that it sets the car on fire.

if you are in california - it can and often does cost $1200- you can not put an aftermarket cat on your car . very strict, you will fail the smog.

Acutally you could probably get a performance one high flow cat cheaper than the original one.
Mine is rusted out as I can smell it from the fumes and considering getting a high flow performance version.

Re: Is it safe to drive my car with a bad catalytic converter?
AMEN. After market cat's cost less than 1/2 the OEM do. And you can buy them online for less than that and pay a muffler guy $40/50 bucks to weld it in if he's hungry.

Cats for my BMW are about $1400 for each side (left and right). I bought after market units when it had 80k miles on it. Then another set when I ha 130k miles on it. Now I'm at 180k miles and will buy another set if I need them. They work as well and seem to last as long or longer than the OEM stuff.

But besides the noise, in newer cars, there are sensors in the exhaust usually in the Catalytic Converter that can adjust your fuel mix. Making sure they're working will help you get max milage and performance too. So yes, change them as soon as you can but no OEM. They're a rip off.

Re: Is it safe to drive my car with a bad catalytic converter?
naw it wont, you will loose some back pressure in the exhaust, more emissions..slightly lower MPG. I removed my cats all together on my mustang and have an off road x pie..its loud..and legal in my state

go to a good shop, and get quotes, 1200 is way to much

or shop online and have someone install them

your car will throw CELs in the dash, if its newer
