I live in a city that has been predominately white and middle class since the 60s. In the last 5 years or so my city has allowed students from Detroit to attend the schools in my area and the crime has gone up sharply. Thefts at the gym, even with cameras are increasing as well.

Two weeks ago my friend was robbed at gun point in broad daylight by two teenagers while going to get takeout in the center of my city. The cops told him this was a rare occurrence although the workers at the restaurant have told him this is NOT rare. As far as I know it never even made the local paper. As far as we can tell the two robbers (one white and one black) are most likely still in high school.

I told my wife that I refuse to live in fear and protecting ourselves by becoming gun owners is one of the best ways to achieve that.

Thank you for the suggestions so far. We have never owned a gun before and the last time I shot one I was about 10 years old with my uncle. We obviously need training but have changed our opinion about gun ownership during the Obama's reign.
