radio geeks: online wideband SDR available!
this has to be one of the coolest websites ive found in years

[link to websdr.ewi.utwente.nl:8901]

On this page you can listen to and control a short-wave receiver located at the amateur radio club ETGD at the University of Twente. In contrast to other web-controlled receivers, this receiver can be tuned by multiple users simultaneously, thanks to the use of Software-Defined Radio.

ive been tuning around for hours its amazing!

its helpful if you turn on waterfall view, click on an area that looks busy and then zoom in and select a frequency visually.

Don't forget 8992 Khz USB where you can join with other GLPers and listen to encoded EAMs and have no idea what any of it means! But "Skyking Skyking" always sounds exciting anyway.

But yes that WEBSDR is astonishing. Grabs the entire broadcast spectrum up to about 30Mhz. 192Khz brings in BBC Radio 4 loud and clear on long wave.

Made up of a purpose built board and graphics cards. Full technical specs not released so nobody else can copy it without a lot of hard work. Plug it into some fast storage and you can even record the entire LW/MM/SW spectrum in real time.

Anyone looking for a baby version to try at home should have a look at this [link to www.funcubedongle.com] It can't grab such a huge chunk of frequencies in one go but can tune through an even wide range.

"The guaranteed coverage of the FUNcube Dongle Pro+ is from 150kHz to 1.9GHz, and there is a gap in coverage between 240MHz and 420MHz."

Oops 198 Khz for BBC Radio 4 LW. Used to be 200Khz back in the day and could be used for calibrating home-built reference oscillators for tuning calibration (multiples of 200Kz).

Very powerful Chinese transmitters often drown out All India Radio by broadcasting on same frequency from relatively close by. For example China on 13170Khz AM (500KW) right now completely blocking India also on 13710 (100KW) (both in English).

Why the gap between 240 and 420? Military?

What is the best antenna to use?

If you click the button that says qrg.globaltuners.com while on a station, it will tell you who and where it is. It's underneath waterfall settings.

I LOVE you!
Short wave was the only way I could keep an ear out for English speaking news during events like Chernobyl, and all the craziness before the cold war ended, I was in Germany and didn't speak the language very well at all. Good times, but scary too.

You could also try getting a TV dongle and unlock it to receive 20 - 2000 MHz ~ish Not quite sure of the link now, but it's out there and cheap. CQ CQ CQ

I mostly use it for WeFax and Sat downlinks to grab the most recent weathermaps.

If any foreign minister begins to defend to the death a "peace conference," you can be sure his government has already placed its orders for new battleships and aeroplanes.
