I live near a major city, and this comes up once in a while (usually when a cyclist gets hit - LOL). They whine that the cars don't treat them as equals and it endangers them.

Hey, assholes - when you stop riding between 2 lanes of cars when they are stopped, just because you can fit...when you stop acting like you're above it all and everyone had better yield to whatever the hell you want to do...whenever you stop acting like morons...THEN, I might treat you the same.

Stop acting like I owe you something. I'm in a car and you're on a toy. You had better weigh the consequence of a collision whether you think you're right or not.
 Quoting: Judge Smails

I thought of another instance. How many times do you see these a-holes with earphones of some sort on? Can I do that driving? No...because it's unsafe. But if you're on a toy it's ok, huh?

One more...since the subject of zipping by a cyclist came up.

I've only done it once in my lifetime, but I've buzzed an a-hole on his bike once.

Why?

Again, IN THE CITY...2 lane road. This asshole, just HAD to be in the passing lane, even though he couldn't go more than about 25 in a 40mph zone. Rode behind the jerkoff for about 1/2 mile until he got a little close to the center, at which point I floored it and zipped by his left side.

The tough guy on his toy gave me the finger, but I had a damned good laugh that day!

HA!

Careful, those slow jerkwads sometimes carry pebbles, ball bearings or even spark plugs to throw at motorists.

I myself have thrown small, heavy objects as a pedestrian. Nothing like chipping up the paint job on the beamer that tried to run you down in an intersection.

Motorists who complain of "cyclists with attitude" are guilty of the exact same sense of self-importance. You simply have the luxury of being the one who won't get hurt just by virtue of using a road. This thread is so full of stupid that it hurts.

Re: I have a long-standing grudge against bicylists. Ask me a question!
I don't have a car. When we lived out on the edge of the rainforest, I used a bicycle to go buy groceries at this tiny shopping center about 4 miles from our house.

My "awesome" gear was an old, 3-speed, no-name bike with a basket on the front of it and a little bell on the handlebar. My "spiffy" riding clothes were blue jeans, a t-shirt, and a fanny pack.

There were no bike trails, so I had no choice but to use the roads. However, I could ride for miles without seeing more than a couple of cars. Whenever I heard one coming up behind me, I would just pull off the road, stop, and let them pass. I was a bit nervous about being hit by someone not paying attention. Too many drivers spend more time screaming into their cell phones than watching where they're going.

Now we live in a more populated area with a lot more traffic, and I don't ride the bike anymore. I feel it's too dangerous. It's safer to walk or take a taxi.

Re: I have a long-standing grudge against bicylists. Ask me a question!
I've never been shot at. I did have a bottle thrown at me, but it missed by a good ways. I've been honked at thousands of times, usually by somebody speeding by who I never even caused to have to slow down. I've had people snort their pipes at me.

I can't tell you how many times I've had people pass me literally within 2 inches of my handlebars. I can understand some of it. Even people who aren't in a hurry, they just don't know what to do. Do they slow down and wait until the oncoming lane is clear so they can pass safely? Do they go ahead and squeeze by the cyclist? Most go ahead and pass because they don't want to slow down the traffic that is behind them. Of course there are plenty who give no regard for the cyclist. These are the same people who want to drive 35MPH in a parking lot while blabbing on their phones. The same ones who want to fly through school zones with kids all around. The same ones who when they kill somebody will have some stupid excuse as to why it wasn't their fault.

I don't give them the option anymore. If there isn't room for someone behind me to pass I take the lane so they can't even try. This really pisses some people off, but I have to do what is safe and legal. The law says that it is illegal to pass anybody on a roadway if you do not have a full lane in which to do so. Of course when there is a nice wide shoulder I stay on the shoulder and give the cars the full lane.
 Quoting: Unixlike

It's possible that in at least some cases, the reason you were honked at was for your benefit.

When I used to have a car, I was extremely cautious around bicyclists. I'd pass them very slowly and give them a very wide berth as I did so. I would also give my horn a little tap to make absolutely sure the bicyclists knew I was there, because I did not want them to swerve out in front of me.

Sidewalks are paid for by gas tax, they r public r/w everybody has a right to use them.
 Quoting: Fret Wiz

Sidewalks are NOT paid for with the gas tax around here!!

Any sidewalks here are paid for by the PROPERTY OWNER who's land they cross in front of.
YES, it was a special assessment when they were built, it is the PROPERTY OWNER'S RESPONSIBILITY to maintain that sidewalk, and it is the Property Owner who gets sued if disrepair happens and someone gets injured because of the sidewalk.

OH ... and the Property Owner has no individual choice as to if there will be a sidewalk in front of his property, that is decided by the City Council or Township Trustees, even though the Property Owner will individually pay for it and be responsible for it.

... as for bicyclist "paying" for the upkeep of the roads they travel on ... sheesh!! Last I saw they weren't being charged to put air in their tires ... and just how much in sales tax are they paying on their bike equipment per year? It wouldn't even be enough to pay to fill one single pot hole, let alone run one traffic light for a year.
 Quoting: TTX8K82

I'm guessing that in the USA, the lion's share of bikers own cars and pay fuel taxes.

I also doubt that bicycles weigh enough to cause any significant wear and tear on the roads.

Okay ...I live in San Jose California...
We have tons of bikers here. I always give them the right of way while I'm driving. But When I take my evening walks with my husband around 5 pm. We walk for like 3 hours every night. And we are on a walk/running/hiking/bike trail near our home....and the bikers are so rude...they yell at us to move so we have to stop and wait for them to pass...when there is really no reason because there are 2 lanes on this trail...one is for passing. Why they dont just pass me instead of screaming or honking a bike horn and expecting me to go out of my way?

lol. It's okay though. I just assume that I live in an area where people dont really care.

I live in Toronto, trust me, I know bad drivers. I was hit from behind twice in less than a year last year, one of which was a 5 car pile-up. With the number of distracted morons on the road and the sheer volume of traffic, you have to have a death wish to ride a bike on the streets around here.

Hate bicyclists when in my truck and hate cars when riding my bicycle on the street. Its a dilemma. So I ride mostly dirt trails with my mountain bike. Most towns where I live have single file ordinances for bikes riding on streets. I scream at the bitches that try to ride two abreast. I tell them that they are ruining the rep for all bikers by being such selfish lawbreakers. I really got into one day with a guy who rode his bike swerving back a forth trying to stop me from passing. I screamed at him telling him he was lucky I wasnt a psycho or I would have just driven right over him. What was that idiot thinking. I also almost got hit while riding my road bike by an old man in a pickup truck. I got right next to him and cursed him out and he tried to tell me I was speeding and that is why he cut me off. By the way both incidents happened on the same curvy stretch of road.

Cyclists like the rest of society have lost all common sense and common courtesy.

There are some common traits in these morons,

- generally they are higher educated; it seems the smarter people think they are the dumber they become
- arrogant and self centered
- aggressive and start an argument but the first to report you with an expanded version of the story and they are always the victim

Unfortunately I have a brother in law that is this type of person, he cycles every where, he wears the tight gay spandex(he is over weight), the pretty little helmet, a tank top (again he is over weight and hairier than a bear)

He plans his day around who he can antagonize on the road, purposely driving in front of cars at a reduced speed, illegally crossing in front of cars, driving in between cars at a light and getting in front of them just to annoy them.

Dumber than shit, with zero survival instincts. He was a wimp in high school and constantly talks about how he was picked on in school(he is 45 years old) When he gets together in his biking group the stupidity is compounded.

I have come to the conclusion that there is something mentally wrong with these type of people.

To add to my above post the most disturbing quality with these people and my brother in law, they get a thrill out of reporting people, he will stage an incident and report the real victim to the police. He will carried as far as is necessary, enjoying spending time in court against these people if needed.

Re: I have a long-standing grudge against bicylists. Ask me a question!
I live in a mountainous area full of narrow 2-way roads that snake thoughout. More often than not, these roads have no posted speed limits (55mph) or are 45mph, and are full of blind hills and corners. It's a beatiful area, and in the good weather, attracts all types of people looking for that "idyllic weekend country drive".

I'm not here to demonize anyone (I took these same drives before I decided to just live here), but I hold a deep & long standing disdain for bicylists.

I mean, specifically, those bicyclists that travel in packs, decked out in expensive gear covered in sponsorship logos (that they're not getting paid to display, quite the opposite!). Biketards?

Now, let me say -- I get the appeal for coming out my way - weather, beauty & a challenging ride with sufficient hills and curves is what I imagine these people dream of, but FFS, someone is going to killed!!

I have had far too many close calls coming around a blind corner to find a pack of these humans, 2 or 3 wide. Even when they're single-file, these roads have no shoulder. If I'm doing 45 in this situation & there happens to be on oncoming car, WTF?

This is not the Tour De France. Going 2+ wide, drifting, this stuff makes me so damn angry.

Either a bicyclist, me, or an oncoming car is going to get killed one of these days.

Minimum speed limits would fix it. I know, good luck with that.

What do ya think, GLP?

It is a pet peeve, not a demand for bicyclists to stay off the roads.
 Quoting: Gratia Plena

Gratia, you're exactly correct & way more consice than I was.

Any cyclist you see riding in an unsafe manner hasn't been hit yet. Behavior tends to change once you realize, rights or no rights, vehicles are bigger than you and often can't see you.

Once you've been hit or injured you tend to realize safety comes before arrogance.
 Quoting: Lioness and cubs

I really am quite shocked by the things I've learned in this thread; how common it is to be hit or basically assaulted by an automobile driver. As I said above, this may peeve me, but I, personally, have never so much as honked or flicked off a cyclist. Drivers piss me off far more; I guess I save my rage for them.

What gives you more right to the road then they have?

I have the same problem where I live but have realized they have the same rights I do so I just slowed down.

It's obvious you didn't read my OP, troll! The difference between animals & people? Animals are smarter than to run up the hill, 3-wide at 40mph below the speed limit...and, they don't have insurance.

Well said & pretty damn good stories. I like the fact that you're basically fighting against "tardism" from both sides.

Like Gratia said above, I guess this really is just a pet peeve. I've been sitting on this OP for years, looking for a place to vent. I really think I chose the correct place for it.

Cartards piss me off far more regularly than biketards do. I think what peeves me about these cyclists (in the situation in my OP) is that they're basically putting everyone at risk.

Despite my thread title (I had to bait a little, right???), I really don't hate ALL cyclists. I have a dear friend that rides, everyday, 365 days (exc in ice - that's his red line) to work. I've seen him on the road several times & he is a safe & courteous rider. I know you guys are out there, getting fucked over daily by douchebag cartards.

Thanks for all the input, GLP. I especially appreciate the intelligent cyclists who've chimed in and conviced me that I'm not wrong to hate a little on the biketards that DO put us all at risk. Cyclists are just a slice of humanity. Like any demographic, there are Tards and there are Heroes.

...Doesn't mean I'm not gonna cuss evertime I see a pack of these fucks on a narrow country road! s226

Peace & be safe, GLP!
