I have a long-standing grudge against bicylists. Ask me a question!

The attitude of the avid cyclist is in fact "We own the road". They believe cyclists through history, back to the early 20th century, were often community activists who's efforts are the reason rideable roads became commonplace in the west.

I'm not saying I agree, just telling their mindset.

Yes, it occurred to me, cuz I ride my bike to WORK in the summer.
I don't want heart disease or to be obese, so after 9 months of winter, the fresh air and exercise are a welcome change.

Don't tell me that going 70 in a 50 will get you anywhere but in an accident faster. There is a reason for speed limits and for rules of the road.
Pay attention, it doesn't matter if it is another car, a bike or heaven help us a pedestrian, everyone uses the roadways.

i have actually been tapped several times while crossing the road as a pedestrian. Riding my bike is safer than walking across the street.

Share the road, that biker could be your son or daughter.

Couldn't quite make the apex! I noticed the cyclist standing near the bottom in the beginning. I feel for these poor fools...all due to an idiot motorcycle rider who had plenty of signs to slow the hell down.

I don’t think that’s true at all. It’s just that the safest way to ride a bicycle is to be fast and assertive.

Well good for you, but not everyone lives close enough to their place of work to bike there! And I'm not talking about going 70 in a 50; I simply want to be able to go 40 in a 40! I can tolerate having to slow down until it is safe to pass, but you bicyclists should show some consideration as well and move over or ride single file when you KNOW you are impeding traffic, and let us pass you. WHY is that so hard for you to understand??

This really ends this discussion. Because if you knew that your 15-year old daughter was cycling in the group ahead then there would be no problem.

I raced bicycles many years ago, and worked in the industry for a period of time, so I have a vested interest. I don't want OP or any of you other tards running me off the road when I am out for a spin just because you can't wait thirty seconds to pass me.

I have been shot at, pelted with bottles, rocks and other projectiles, defended myself with both a bicycle pump and (when I got smarter) a handgun from asshole motorists. WTF, people? Is it really all that important to own the road, or is there something else going on here?

And OP, it doesn't matter one damn bit of difference if the cyclist is riding a bike that costs more than you make in a year and is wearing sporty threads or if it is your daughter riding her bike to school.

Obey the laws. And yes, that works both ways. As for taxes, we all support road taxes through fuel surcharges.

Not really, because I teach my children to ride their bikes safely, and to respect not only the rules of the road, but also the other drivers on it...

I think the point is that a driver MAY be obeying the laws and come around a turn while going the speed limit only to unexpectedly be on your ass. Then they have to slam on their brakes, possibly with children in the car, or God forbid YOU get hit.

It is a pet peeve, not a demand for bicyclists to stay off the roads.

The majority of this type of cyclist I've encountered tend to be white, middle-aged men in their late 30's and 40's Lance Armstrong wanna-be's in logo-filled spandex who ride in packs. I personally know a few (talk with occasionally). The few I know are liberals on a crusade for bike lanes and for diminishing car transportation (an agenda). The most hardcore amongst them are pushing this with all of their strength:

I'm saying there is a tendency in some of these groups to find a well-defined agenda. Car drivers are the enemy.

As I stated, everyone needs to observe the rules of the road.
You would never catch me going 3 wide on a highway or major throughway but I will admit to doing it on side streets on Sundays.
Drivers are just too crazy, they don't pay attention to other cars, never mind pedestrians or bikers.

And yikes, you must live a long way from work.
I can bike it in 20 min walk it in 40.

Drive time is somewhere in between.
I live in an urban jungle that has adapted to the summer bike culture.

However I do know the dangers of biking without being aware.
I have a friend who was smucked and lived to tell the tale.
She bought another bike as soon as she healed.

You can't be serious!? I had no idea stuff like that happened regularly. FFS, people just suck.




I expect ANY enthusiast of ANY hobby to have exceptional equipment, and you're right - doesn't matter what kind of car or bike if they collide, but if MY daughter were a regular rider, she'd be doing her fair share of sharing the road & there would be no issue.

Any cyclist you see riding in an unsafe manner hasn't been hit yet. Behavior tends to change once you realize, rights or no rights, vehicles are bigger than you and often can't see you.

Once you've been hit or injured you tend to realize safety comes before arrogance.

Like it or not the car is at the bottom of the yield to pyramid. The car has the most mass and the most control.

Cars yield to motorcycles, motorcycles yield to bicycles, bicycles yield to walkers and everyone yields to horses.

I've never been shot at. I did have a bottle thrown at me, but it missed by a good ways. I've been honked at thousands of times, usually by somebody speeding by who I never even caused to have to slow down. I've had people snort their pipes at me.

I can't tell you how many times I've had people pass me literally within 2 inches of my handlebars. I can understand some of it. Even people who aren't in a hurry, they just don't know what to do. Do they slow down and wait until the oncoming lane is clear so they can pass safely? Do they go ahead and squeeze by the cyclist? Most go ahead and pass because they don't want to slow down the traffic that is behind them. Of course there are plenty who give no regard for the cyclist. These are the same people who want to drive 35MPH in a parking lot while blabbing on their phones. The same ones who want to fly through school zones with kids all around. The same ones who when they kill somebody will have some stupid excuse as to why it wasn't their fault.

I don't give them the option anymore. If there isn't room for someone behind me to pass I take the lane so they can't even try. This really pisses some people off, but I have to do what is safe and legal. The law says that it is illegal to pass anybody on a roadway if you do not have a full lane in which to do so. Of course when there is a nice wide shoulder I stay on the shoulder and give the cars the full lane.

Sidewalks are NOT paid for with the gas tax around here!!

Any sidewalks here are paid for by the PROPERTY OWNER who's land they cross in front of. YES, it was a special assessment when they were built, it is the PROPERTY OWNER'S RESPONSIBILITY to maintain that sidewalk, and it is the Property Owner who gets sued if disrepair happens and someone gets injured because of the sidewalk.

OH ... and the Property Owner has no individual choice as to if there will be a sidewalk in front of his property, that is decided by the City Council or Township Trustees, even though the Property Owner will individually pay for it and be responsible for it.

... as for bicyclist "paying" for the upkeep of the roads they travel on ... sheesh!! Last I saw they weren't being charged to put air in their tires ... and just how much in sales tax are they paying on their bike equipment per year? It wouldn't even be enough to pay to fill one single pot hole, let alone run one traffic light for a year.

Interesting that some use the paying for roads and sidewalks as the excuse for bad behavior towards cyclists.

I pay my federal and provincial taxes, taxes that are used for infrastructure.
I pay gas tax, even in the summer months.
I pay for road repairs on my property taxes.

I ride a bike on those roads and I am just as entitled to ride the bike as I am to drive my car or for that matter use my feet to move myself from one place to another.

Splitting hairs on road costs is just silly.

Punt the whole pack off the road, so that they plunge, screaming, down the mountainside!

Many Cyclist are wearing Go-Pro cams these days...The police will work you over if you mess with the cyclist and its caught on video.

I found one of these biketards in the middle of a curved two way mountain road in my town. He had been hit by a truck and the driver fled. Since he was in the middle of the road with a shattered helmet and a broken back - I had no choice but to try to stop traffic so he would not get run over. I threw some flares out - called 911 - and others stopped to help me including a city bus driver. The situation was so dangerous due to blind curves on the road that we dragged his sorry ass to the shoulder. You should never do this with in injured person- but we were afraid we were all gonna die. The paramedic said he would have done the same. I don't know why these bicyclists choose dangerous roads and sometimes cause accidents. They are the ones that get injured so it must be a psychological death wish of sorts.

I know what I'm looking for and it ain't the wrong info on stopping distance....your 70ft fails to take reaction time into the calc.

And I am not 100% convinced that it is that great of a sport. I mean, a lot of them have hunchbacks due to the posture unique to cycling; the males may also suffer impotence and poor prostate health because you have the unnatural saddle stick to their groin...

Oh well, just my biased opinion.
