one of the key steps in making Mars habitable, would be the gradual introduction of plants capable of enduring suc a hostile environ. right up my line. iwould love to go. make no mistake, i love this earth, especialy the wondrous flora. but to contribute to something so groundbreaking, and in my field. for that, i could become a martian.

Re: 78,000 apply to leave Earth forever to live on Mars..To become Red Planet colonists
Huge numbers of people on Earth are keen to leave the planet forever and seek a new life homesteading on Mars.

About 78,000 people have applied to become Red Planet colonists with the nonprofit organization Mars One since its application process opened on April 22, officials announced Tuesday. Mars One aims to land four people on the Red Planet in 2023 as the vanguard of a permanent colony, with more astronauts arriving every two years thereafter.

"With 78,000 applications in two weeks, this is turning out to be the most desired job in history," Mars One Chief Executive Officer and co-founder Bas Lansdorp said in a statement. "These numbers put us right on track for our goal of half a million applicants." [Mars One's Red Planet Colony Project (Gallery)]

I thought about applying. The application fee is the only thing stopping me at this point. I could see them collecting everyone's non-refundable 50 dollar application fee and then announcing that the project is cancelled. Best scam ever.

Not that it is a scam. Seems legit to me.
Everything is a circle.

One would certainly hope so! If not, it would be, in regards to the power structure, Earth #2. What is the point of leaving at all then, if not to escape and start something new?

For one, when this will be possible, it will take them 3 years to get there.

Also they better prepare to pay a hefty cost for their trip. Space tourists have paid from $20 Million for the very first one up to $50 Million for the latest ones just to fly on a Soyuz to the International Space Station.

I wish them good luck getting the money together to finance their travel to Mars.
I came. I saw. I Concorde.

I would love to go, but I imagine the criteria for acceptance will basically be genius IQ, young, scientific background etc. It wouldn't make sense to send an average person.

Not necessarily. You dont need a genius to build and maintain a settlement. They will need grunts to do the dirty work. Sure, grunts with an advanced education and mentally stable but otherwise, normal people.

what a joke. These people will die of insanity before they even get there. I can't think of anything worse than going to a cold lifeless planet and spending the rest of my life staring out of little windows at it. This will never ever happen, I wish I could make a very large bet on it somewhere.
