This won't effect earth at all. If this explosion happened 3.6 to 5 billion light years away, then it happened in a different galaxy. Our galaxy is around 150,000 light years across. The most that we could hope for is to see a new point of light between the big dipper and the constellation Leo.

Okay, so I'm space-stupid, I'll admit. As far as I can figure out for myself, and the other stoners here saying "Huh?", I need to know only a few important things:

A) Is this going to be a cool light show that I can watch, and if so, when, what direction, and what should I expect to see from the East coast?

B) Is this going to fuck up the grid EMP-style?

C) Is this going to microwave my gonads if I'm not in a cave?

D) Someone PLEASE tell me if I need to bring in the tomatos!!

Not that it matters much, as I think we're all fucked any minute now anyway... Just wondering.

Cheers from Canuckistan!

cheers
 Quoting: Canuck_Hillbilly

For C) the answere is definitely yes. Starting on the 10th you must wrap your gonads in tinfoil to prevent damage from the rays. Remember, non tin foil no gonads. Be safe my friend.

They mentioned explosion in "nearby universe". WTF can someone PLEASE explain that to me? "Universe"? So are other universes no longer theory?gasp
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1534352

Actually, it said in THE nearby Universe - not "a" nearby universe.

Re: Official NASA: The Glow Of A Classic Supernova Will Soon Emerge!
Found a article where there seems to be biological prove that a supernova occoured about 2.2 Mill years ago (roughly the time humans developed)

Oceanic sediment contains an iron isotope that ancient bacteria accumulated 2.2 million years ago when debris rained on Earth from a supernova explosion. Shown are the remnants of a much younger supernova remnant, Cassiopeia A, shown in a composite image from three NASA observatories.

So a supernova in our neighbourhood left traces on earth, but I dont know if this can relate....

Meh....you all should watch this crazy movie from John Carpenter from back in the middle 80's...it's called "Prince of Darkness"...the "awakening" begins with the light of a super nova reaching earth...and then shit just starts to fall apart...

It's a pretty cheesy movie by today's standards but there are some redeeming qualities. Once you sit back, let go of it's age and just get into the story...you will never look at a mirror the same way again....enjoy. If you like a good story and can look past age or special effects...this is a good one.

Scientists are hoping to see the Supernova which they think caused the gamma ray burst. They expect to witness the supernova between the 10th and 12th of may 2013 at the same place where the burst occured. without a teleskop I dont think its visible

A) Sadly, no. Being more than gigaparsec away and ~22 in visual magnitude this firework is only observable with use of large and very large telescopes. verysad
As for direction, it is located roughly half a way between Regulus (alpha Leo) and Alkaid (Eta UMa, tip of Big Dipper handle)

B) Negative. Toooo-ooo far.

C) Negative. But you may take some precautions, ofc grinning

D) To give them more spring sunlight would be more reasonable. :)
