Re: Pandemic Preps - Need to Know Information
The Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918 (lasted over a period of three years occurring in waves), one in 50 people died. A total of 50 Million people perished from it, more than had died in the World War that had just ended.

The current flu (H7N9) has a death rate of one in 5. Ten times more deadly than the Spanish Flu. Uh oh. Human to human transmission has not been sustained yet, but scientists are saying this particular virus mutates at an astonishing rate, so human to human transmission may occur soon. If it does, this should immediately raise the red flag on your bug out plans. Exposed individuals can get on a plane and be anywhere in the world in 22 hours.

Remeber this: during the Spanish flu, the new wonder drug aspirin was just being popularized. Many people took it when they got that flu, and because their fever broke they laid down to get comfortable and never got up again. If you get this flu, do NOT try to break the fever unless it gets to 104 degrees. Do NOT lie down. Stay upright, move around if you can. Tolerate the fever even if it's making you a little delirious, the fever kills the virus.

Also, anyone who hasn't started to significantly improve their vitamin D levels is way behind the curve.

And this just breaking...
Epidemic Hazard in USA on Thursday, 09 May, 2013 at 04:50 (04:50 AM) UTC.
Description
Two teenagers from Montgomery and Liberty counties have died, and a third is in critical condition. Health experts said all three shared similar symptoms. Now they are working together to figure out what is behind it all. Tyler Lane Budro, 17, was the first case. He got sick in February and died on March 10. Tyler lived in Liberty County and was a junior at Hull-Daisetta High School. His mother said he first had a fever, and then violent seizures started days later. An infectious disease specialist in Montgomery County said Tyler, as well as a teenage girl and a teenage boy in that county had similar symptoms. The girl died on April 29. The boy is in critical condition at a Houston hospital. The specialist also said the teens' symptoms included a fever, coughing, pneumonia, seizures and respiratory failure. Dr. Syed Ibrahim is Montgomery County's epidemiologist. He said they ran 30 tests on the teens, including checks for rabies and meningitis. All tests came back with negative results, so health experts still have no idea what any of the teens came down with.

Dr. Ibrahim and other area health experts are still looking for answers. "I'm really concerned. I'm sad as well because these are the cases of the teenagers in our county," said Dr. Ibrahim, MD, MPH. Parents and students at New Caney High School, where the teen who is in the hospital attends, are worried too. "I think they should have informed us about it more 'cuz it's not right that some kids don't know about it and other kids are spreading (rumors) making it worse," said student Courtney Villareal. School officials in New Caney ISD said they did not notify parents because they don't have enough information. They said they don't know what they're dealing with at this point. Dr. Ibrahim said the disease or diseases do not appear to be contagious." Some in New Caney ISD said they are afraid people might panic. Health experts stress there is no need for that. They're just stumped. Tyler's grieving mom is hoping experts can crack the case very soon.

hi Great info! TY. Here's some more points I found that might be helpful
-- A 3 month supply IS NOT the new shortened “year supply”, but is in addition to a year supply
(could be used for a possible self-quarantine inside your home).
--Stockpile face masks.
--Purchase necessary Medical supplies.
--Be prepared to be self-sufficient for 3 mo. to prevent exposure.
--Know how to recognize symptoms and deal with infected family members.

Re: Pandemic Preps - Need to Know Information
Pandemic Preparedness
Some Suggested Pandemic Supplies
• 1 gallon of liquid bleach per person of the household (yes that is gallons) - to sanitize
everything
• 4 boxes of latex gloves (different sizes for every member of the household)
• 2 boxes of 20 of N95 masks for every member of the household
• antibacterial soap- for meticulous hand washing
• styrofoam "Take Out" containers - to give to people that come to your door looking for food
• 100' roll of clear 4 mil plastic - for setting up an isolation room
• 10 rolls duct tape - for setting up an isolation room
• more HEPA filters - for my whole room air filtration system
• several boxes of Borax - for provisional toilets
• 25 lbs. of lime per person - for provisional toilets
• 50 "yard waste" black garbage bags per person - for provisional toilets and garbage
• 100 "kitchen" bags per person - for garbage
• 50 "Trash Compactor" bags - for provisional toilets
• 25 lbs. of kitty litter per person - for sick people's body fluids clean up
• 100 rolls of toilet paper per person - for personal sanitation
• 20 rolls of paper towels per person
• several boxes of straws - for sick people so you don’t contaminate drinking cups too much
• clothesline - for washing clothes by hand
• laundry soap - for washing clothes by hand
• good dish soap like "Dawn" or other aggressive anti-grease formula
• water filtration and purification devices
• water collection, storage and carrying containers
• water, water, and more water
• portable radio (hand-cranked or battery powered)
• walkie talkies (hand-held, two-way GMRS radios)
• batteries
I am sure there are more items but this is a good list to start with.
Stock a supply of water and food. During a pandemic you may not be able to get to a store. Even if you can get to a store, the store may be out of supplies. Public waterworks
services may also be interrupted. Stocking supplies can be useful in other types of emergencies, such as power outages and disasters.
Store foods that:
• are nonperishable (will keep for a long time) and don't require refrigeration are easy to prepare
in case you are unable to cook
• require little or no water, so you can conserve water for drinking

Re: Pandemic Preps - Need to Know Information
Preparing for a Pandemic Influenza Outbreak: The Self Imposed Reverse Isolation (SIRQ) Plan
1) Protecting the Family – Building a Safe Haven
a. Protecting the family from the influenza virus is central to the plan.
b. This requires that families sequester themselves from the outside world in order to
avoid infection.
• Children should not go to school or play with friends.
• Parents should work from home as much as possible.
• The family should not attend public events (sporting events, cultural events, religious services, etc.).
• If family members do have to leave sequestration, they must be educated and committed to maintaining protection.
c. Parents
• Must establish their home as a protected cell.
• Must understand that as long as their family is sequestered they are safe, but safety is only good AS LONG AS EVERY
d. Children
• Are at high risk for transmission of disease because of less than ideal hygiene,
close contact with others in closed environments, inadequate hand washing, etc.
• Need to be sequestered in family groups.
• Need to be isolated from others who are potentially infected.
• Need to be trained in methods of protecting themselves from infection at their level.
3) FAMILY MEMBER REMAINS SAFE AND DOES NOT BRING THE INFECTION HOME.
• Must understand the importance of not allowing children to interact with others
outside the family during the time the plan is in place.
• Must have their homes prepared for a disruption in services.
• Must know how to remain safe when they leave the home:
Protective equipment, Protective methods of interacting in an infectious environment.
4) Protecting the Individual
a. During an influenza pandemic, any individual that has to interact with the outside world must consider all they come in contact with as being infected.
b. Individuals must know how to interact in such an environment:
• Need education and training about how to protect themselves.
• Need protective equipment to allow them to interact.
5) Protecting the Community
a. Community leadership must support the SIRQ plan and strongly encourage its implementation:
• Educating leaders, families and individuals about the plan.
• Implementation of reverse quarantine protection early (BEFORE THE INFECTION HITS THE COMMUNITY).
• Cancellation of schools, meetings, public venues, etc. (BEFORE THE INFECTION STARTS)
• Identify key services and individuals essential to these services:
o Provide or strongly encourage personal protection use in all essential sectors early.
o Plan on contingencies.
b. Must provide venues for education of individuals and families.
c. Should facilitate obtaining protective equipment for individuals or groups.
d. Must lead by example.
This plan can be implemented without government or community support. A family or individual could use this plan and protect themselves as long as they are willing to keep
themselves separate.

Smallpox Progression
Incubation Period
(Duration: 7 to 17 days) - Not contagious
Exposure to the virus is followed by an incubation period during which people do not have any symptoms and may feel fine. This incubation period averages about 12 to 14 days but can range from 7 to 17 days. During this time, people are not contagious.
Initial Symptoms
(Duration: 2 to 4 days) - Sometimes contagious*
The first symptoms of smallpox include fever, malaise, head and body aches, and sometimes vomiting. The fever is usually high, in the range of 101 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit. At this time, people are usually too sick to carry on their normal activities. This is called the prodrome phase and may last for 2 to 4 days.
Early Rash
(Duration: about 4 days) - Most contagious
A rash emerges first as small red spots on the tongue and in the mouth. These spots develop into sores that break open and spread large amounts of the virus into the mouth and throat. At this time, the person becomes most contagious.
Around the time the sores in the mouth break down, a rash appears on the skin, starting on the face and spreading to the arms and legs and then to the hands and feet. Usually the rash spreads to all parts of the body within 24 hours. As the rash appears, the fever usually falls and the person may start to feel better.
By the third day of the rash, the rash becomes raised bumps. By the fourth day, the bumps fill with a thick, opaque fluid and often have a depression in the center that looks like a bellybutton. (This is a major distinguishing characteristic of smallpox.) Fever often will rise again at this time and remain high until scabs form over the bumps.
Pustular Rash
(Duration: about 5 days) - Contagious
The bumps become pustules—sharply raised, usually round and firm to the touch as if there’s a small round object under the skin. People often say the bumps feel like BB pellets embedded in the skin.
Pustules and Scabs
(Duration: about 5 days) - Contagious
The pustules begin to form a crust and then scab. By the end of the second week after the rash appears, most of the sores have scabbed over.
Resolving Scabs
(Duration: about 6 days) - Contagious
The scabs begin to fall off, leaving marks on the skin that eventually becomes pitted scars. Most scabs will have fallen off three weeks after the rash appears. The person is contagious to others until all of the scabs have fallen off.
Scabs resolved
Not contagious Scabs have fallen off. Person is no longer contagious.
* Smallpox may be contagious during the prodrome phase, but is most infectious during the first 7 to 10 days following rash onset.
Facts about Small Pox
What should I know about smallpox?
Smallpox is an acute, contagious, and sometimes fatal disease caused by the variola virus (an orthopoxvirus), and marked by fever and a distinctive progressive skin rash. In 1980, the disease was declared eradicated following worldwide vaccination programs. However, in the aftermath of the events of September and October, 2001, the U.S. government is taking precautions to be ready to deal with a bioterrorist attack using smallpox as a weapon.
As a result of these efforts:
1) There is a detailed nationwide smallpox preparedness program to protect Americans against smallpox as a biological weapon.
This program includes the creation of preparedness teams that are ready to respond to a smallpox attack on the United States. Members of these teams – health care and public health workers - are being vaccinated so that they might safely protect others in the event of a smallpox outbreak.
2) There is enough smallpox vaccine to vaccinate everyone who would need it in the event of an emergency.
How serious is the smallpox threat?
The deliberate release of smallpox as an epidemic disease is now regarded as a possibility, and the United States is taking precautions to deal with this possibility.
How dangerous is the smallpox threat?
Smallpox is classified as a Category A agent by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Category A agents are believed to pose the greatest potential threat for adverse public health impact and have a moderate to high potential for large-scale dissemination. The public is generally more aware of category A agents, and broad-based public health preparedness efforts are necessary. Other Category A agents are anthrax, plague, botulism, tularemia, and viral hemorrhagic fevers.
1. If I am concerned about a smallpox attack, can I go to my doctor and get the smallpox vaccine?
At the moment, the smallpox vaccine is not available for
members of the general public. In the event of a smallpox outbreak, however, there is enough smallpox vaccine to vaccinate everyone every person in the United States.
2. If someone comes in contact with smallpox, how long does it take to show symptoms?
After exposure, it takes between 7 and 17 days for symptoms of smallpox to appear (average incubation time is 12 to 14 days). During this time, the infected person feels fine and is not contagious.)
3. Is smallpox fatal?
The majority of patients with smallpox recover, but death may occur in up to 30% of cases. Many smallpox survivors have permanent scars over large areas of their body, especially their face. Some are left blind.
4. How is smallpox spread?
Smallpox normally spreads from contact with infected persons. Generally, direct and fairly prolonged face-to-face contact is required to spread smallpox from one person to another. Smallpox also can be spread through direct contact with infected bodily fluids or contaminated objects such as bedding or clothing. Indirect spread is less common. Rarely, smallpox has been spread by virus carried in the air in enclosed settings such as buildings, buses, and trains. Smallpox is not known to be transmitted by insects or animals.
5. If smallpox is released in aerosol form, how long does the virus survive?
The smallpox virus is fragile. In laboratory experiments, 90% of aerosolized smallpox virus dies within 24 hours; in the presence of ultraviolet (UV) light, this percentage
would be even greater. If an aerosol release of smallpox occurs, 90% of virus matter will be inactivated or dissipated in about 24 hours.
6. How many people would have to get smallpox before it is considered an outbreak?
One confirmed case of smallpox is considered a public health emergency.
7. Is smallpox contagious before the smallpox symptoms show?
A person with smallpox is sometimes contagious with onset of fever (prodrome phase), but the person becomes most contagious with the onset of rash. The infected person is contagious until the last smallpox scab falls off.
8. Is there any treatment for smallpox?
Smallpox can be prevented through use of the smallpox vaccine. There is no proven treatment for smallpox, but research to evaluate new antiviral agents is ongoing.
Early results from laboratory studies suggest that the drug cidofovir may fight against the smallpox virus; currently, studies with animals are being done to better understand the drug's ability to treat smallpox disease (the use of cidofovir to treat smallpox or smallpox reactions should be evaluated and monitored by experts at NIH and CDC). Patients with smallpox can benefit from supportive therapy (e.g.,
intravenous fluids, medicine to control fever or pain) and antibiotics for any secondary bacterial infections that may occur.
Treatment
Described below are the likely stages of a smallpox outbreak and the critical responses required. This information is intended as a context in developing a post-event smallpox plan.
1. Isolation and treatment of cases – Suspected and confirmed cases will need to be quickly moved to facilities that provide appropriate health care and isolation to prevent additional spread of smallpox.
2. Diagnosis – Rapid preliminary diagnosis can be based on clinical characteristics of the illness with sequential laboratory confirmation.
3. Vaccination – A large number of the public will be needed to control the outbreak, and individuals must be vaccinated as soon as possible after the first case is confirmed.
4. Surveillance for new cases – It will be important to quickly and efficiently diagnose new cases to ensure that the ring vaccination program will quickly control the outbreak.
5. Containment Activities that would include:
• Contact and contact of contact tracing - Identification of contacts of smallpox cases (contact with cases beginning with the initial symptoms (fever)) and household contacts of these contacts will need to be identified, vaccinated and isolated if they develop illness. Contacts of cases should be vaccinated as soon as possible to maximize the effectiveness of post exposure vaccination and minimize the number of new cases. It will also be important to track patient movement (where they have been) after onset of symptoms and identify all possible contacts of the case.
• Vaccination and monitoring of contacts – Post exposure vaccination may prevent or ameliorate disease and vaccination may protect from additional exposures from
other contacts that develop smallpox. Contacts are monitored for illness to ensure that they can be isolated to prevent transmission to others and given appropriate medical care, if they develop smallpox.
• Community vaccination – It may be necessary to vaccinate all persons in exposed communities in addition to contacts and household contacts of contacts.
6. Epidemiologic investigation - Any potential linkages between the patients (review travel history for 2-3 weeks prior to symptom onset) must be identified to determine if there is a common source for exposure and to determine if any additional persons may have been exposed to initial source (so they can be traced and evaluated for illness or
watched for illness onset. If ill, isolate and vaccinate their contacts (identify contacts similar to above), if not already ill, and to ensure that all who need to be included in the ring vaccination program are included.
7. Large Scale vaccination - A decision may be made by public health officials and/or political leaders to offer vaccine to all persons within the city, county or state.
8. Information Management - Detailed information will be needed on an ongoing, realtime basis to inform, health officials, clinic managers, and the public about the status of smallpox response activities.
9. Communications - To address public questions, minimize false rumors and misinformation, and reassure the public that the public health system is responding effectively, it is imperative that public health officials acknowledge the seriousness of a smallpox outbreak and provide accurate, timely information to the public through the media. Here's an interesting site.

Strange that the people of the Middle Ages thought birds gave them the plague.
 Quoting: Meadow1

The site says they thought the plague was spread by birds.
This is exactly what's happening with the birds flu, isn't it ?

And it took a few centuries more to prove that germs are spread by all sorts of living beings (birds included).

They weren't so stupid after all, were they ?

They may have been ignorant about germs and bacteria, but they had a collective wisdom from their ancestors who lived before them. They knew rotting bodies were dangerous to health.

They had their ways of coping. They used vinegar, oils, herbs, whatever they could. I'm sure many wise men and women were burned at the stake and hung because of ignorance on the part of the people.

Vaccines and antibiotics become useless sooner or later. If this bird flu or any flu becomes pandemic, natural medicines will be our only defense.

AKO,

I'm sure this thread will grow like the magic beans in Jack And the Beanstalk. ha ha.

Myself? I'm not afraid of the flu, but I have taken some precautions.

1. Vitamin C. I have several bottles, and I also have the C in cough drop [ lozenges ] form. They'll come in handy if someone has a sore throat.

2. I have stocked frozen orange, limeaid, and pineapple juices. I also have bottles of water stocked just for the juices.

3. I have an assortment of herbal teas and canned and boxed soups.

4. I am a master herbalist, so I have cabinets full of dried herbs, examples: peppermint for stomach ailments, white willow bark for fever, dill for gas and bloating.

5. I do have Tylenol in case someone wants it.

6. I keep Bragg apple cider vinegar in spray bottles for wiping counters, floors, etc. Bragg is the "whole mother." Raw-unflitered acv. I can also mix a teaspoon in a glass of water to boost my immune system. Bragg is gluten free.

7. I make anti-bacterial wipes for when I go out shopping. I pour 90% alcohol on damp paper towels, fold them over and store them in a plastic bags. I wipe shopping carts, door knobs, handles, etc with the wipes. You can also use 80% vodka. That will kill bacteria as well.

Tons of info here thanks for the info. Will start writing it all down in my note book to keep just in case if something should happen. I do know my mom use to use a mustard poultice for us when we were kids to get rid of chest colds worked great. Also there is a onion poultice, as well as onion syrup that use to work.

Re: Pandemic Preps - Need to Know Information
Dr. John Christopher's Anti-Plague Formula

Ingredients:
4 ounces Black walnut concentrate
4 ounces Wormwood concentrate
4 ounces Marshmallow root concentrate
4 ounces Oak bark concentrate
4 ounces Lobelia leaf or seed concentrate
4 ounces Mullein leaf concentrate
4 ounces Skullcap leaf concentrate
4 ounces Uva Ursi, Hydrangea or Gravel root concentrate
8 ounces Comfrey root concentrate
32 ounces Apple cider vinegar
20 ounces Honey raw, unfiltered and local is best
20 ounces Glycerine
8 ounces Garlic juice fresh, raw, organic

Each concentrate should be made individually. Start by soaking each herb for four hours or more in enough distilled water to cover them. After soaking, add more distilled water so that the total added
water equals 16 oz. water per 4 oz. of herbs. *Roots should be soaked overnight.

After adding the appropriate amount of distilled water to the
soaked herbs, simmer on a very low heat in a covered saucepan or double
boiler for 30 minutes. Strain this decoction and place into an
uncovered clean pan or uncovered double boiler and simmer it down to ¼
the original amount, in other words, to 4 oz.

Each concentrate should be made separately and then only mixed when
the entire formula is blended together. Using the amounts in this
handout 120 ounces (approximately one gallon) will be made. If you
desire to make less, just reduce all the proportions equally.

To make an eighth ounce of garlic juice takes one full pound of
fresh garlic. Fresh garlic juice is extremely potent. That’s what
makes the formula work.
==================

D0 NOT USE ALUMINUM, TEFLON, OR CRACKED PORCELAIN. Glass corning ware or stainless steel or whole porcelain are best. This is the best remedy for colds, flu or any communicable disease (especially bacteriological). It strengthens and stimulates your immune system and should be used as a tonic and preventative at the dosage of one tablespoon of syrup per day. If infected, increase to one tablespoon per hour.
====================

This can be stored in refrigerator for years, or so I have read. The garlic and the apple cider vinegar (ACV) are the two main ingredients that make this formula work. You want an organic, that is "of the mother". Braggs is a good brand. To make the garlic juice you will need a lot of garlic.

To make Garlic Juice: for the above amount use 2 1/2 lbs. of garlic - peel, blend in blender with vinegar (do not liquify). Let set for 3 days, shaking several times per day. Squeeze out liquid and measure. If needed add more vinegar to equal the 8 parts.
============================

Here is a blog that takes you step by step on how to make it, she states it takes her two days! Here is what she says about making garlic juice:
I can get 8 oz. of garlic juice out of a pound of garlic when using my Green Star Juicer. Other juicers will likely need more garlic to get that much juice. If you don’t have a juicer use this alternative method: for the example of parts above amount use 2 1/2 lbs. of garlic - peel, blend in blender with vinegar (do not liquify). Let set for 4 - 5 days, shaking several times perday. Squeeze out liquid and measure. If needed add more vinegar to equal a total of 10 parts, 8 vinegar and 2 garlic juice.

You're all welcome to visit my site and learn more about herbs and their role in keeping us healthy.

Not selling anything. My blog is a teaching site. Recipes for making 4 Thieves Vinegar and 4 Thieves Oil are posted in the archives.

Archives to the right.

Thank you for sharing, I have made my own Elderberry syrup and onion syrup, but haven't tried to make Thieves Oil yet. I read some very interesting articles on it and I don't think there is any harm in making a batch and keeping it on hand. How long would you say it keeps for, should it be refrigerated?

If the REAL S is Hitting The Fan... I'm not going to fuck around with herbs and spices. I do believe they have their place in prevention however.

The following is "inside information from a "uncle".
Do what you want with it.

Preventing Cytokine Storm Resulting from Flu Virus that has advanced past the window of opportunity for the administration of anti-viral(s) or for use against anti-viral resistant Flu infections

With the start of flu symptoms you'd want to take:

Benadryl- a H1 Blocker
Tagamet or Pepcid- a H2 Blocker
Tylenol- A Anti-inflammatory

This cocktail is not "endorsed" by any health organization.
Is is a logical and simple means of trying to prevent the body's immune system from going into overdrive and overreacting from the perceived threat of infection.

I'd like to tweak this a wee bit...
a N-95 is no where near as effective as a P-100 mask. You can buy a box of p-100's on Amazon for just a little more than the N-95's and the P-100 is effective at blocking aerosolized liquids. A N-95 is only meant to block dry particles.

You are correct that you do NOT want to take any NSAIDS (aspirin, Advil, Motrin and many others). These are anti-inflammatories. Tylenol is not an anti-inflammatory.

Since I have a bit of asthma, once I learned about NSAIDS causing problems with colds/flu, I personally experimented. I used Tylenol which I never use as it seems as potent as water when you are hurting, this time to reduce the fever only. After two days I swapped to Advil and within a few hours I could feel my lungs tightening and went back to Tylenol. Much better with breathing problems.

Since I still wasn't convinced, the next bug that came along, forgot about the Tylenol and started using Advil right away. Was getting so sick almost ended up in the ER with breathing problems. Went off the Advil and took Tylenol only. Made such a difference I still with Tylenol when I think it is the flu or a bad cold from now on.
-----------------------
No, Tylenol (acetaminophen) is an over the counter (OTC) anti-pyretic (fever) medication. It has slight anti-inflammatory properties, but it IS NOT classified as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).

The complete list of approved NSAIDs is very long. The following list contains only NSAIDs that are commonly used:

Aspirin
Salsalate (Amigesic)
Diflunisal (Dolobid)
Ibuprofen (Motrin)
Ketoprofen (Orudis)
Nabumetone (Relafen)
Piroxicam (Feldene)
Naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn)
Diclofenac (Voltaren)
Indomethacin (Indocin)
Sulindac (Clinoril)
Tolmetin (Tolectin)
Etodolac (Lodine)
Ketorolac (Toradol)
Oxaprozin (Daypro)
Celecoxib (Celebrex)

During the plague in the early 1900's, both sets of my parents lived in North Dakota several miles apart...didn't know each other...

My mom's dad was the 'county' DR. He got a feather and carefully coated each of his family members back of the throat w/Kerosene...very lightly...every day...NO ONE DIED!

My dad's family did nothing...they lost 3 children in 1 week...

I don't know why it worked...

I'm just sayin'
