Russia Preparing To Transfer Advanced Air Defense System--s300--To Syria
Israel has warned the U.S. that a Russian deal is imminent to sell advanced ground-to-air missile systems to Syria, weapons that would significantly boost the regime's ability to stave off intervention in its civil war.

U.S. officials said on Wednesday that they are analyzing the information Israel provided about the suspected sale of S-300 missile batteries to Syria, but wouldn't comment on whether they believed such a transfer was near.

Russian officials didn't immediately return requests to comment. The Russian Embassy in Washington has said its policy is not to comment on arms sales or transfers between Russia and other countries.

The government of President Bashar al-Assad has been seeking to purchase S-300 missile batteries—which can intercept both manned aircraft and guided missiles—from Moscow going back to the George W. Bush administration, U.S. officials said. Western nations have lobbied President Vladimir Putin's government not to go ahead with the sale. If Syria were to acquire and deploy the systems, it would make any international intervention in Syria far more complicated, according to U.S. and Middle East-based officials.

SA-10 designed to stop B-52's trying to fly so low radar will not pick them up, works great on terrain following cruise missiles also.

Self-sufficient, self-contained no maintenance ever, sets itself up in 5 minutes if not deployed at the time a threat shows itself.

Peak tech still even after 35+ years in service.

That's not what I'm talking about. Funding and forceful actions are two things.

The rebels weren’t behind those fireballs. As the international community refuses to officially intervene, Mike Giglio on how regional players are stepping up their own involvement in Syria.

The airstrikes hit key military installations and were the second by Israel in as many days. Khatib was happy to see the Syrian Army dealt such a heavy blow. But the attacks also hammered home a grim reality—that the Syrian revolution, which started as a homegrown protest movement, is now a “battlefield for the world’s powers,” as Khatib puts it, echoing many in the opposition.

“They’re all looking out for their own interests in Syria,” Khatib says, “which makes Syrian blood a secondary concern.”

The conflict in Syria, analysts say, looks likely to continue this way: regional players stepping up their own involvement, even as the international community refuses to officially intervene. Salman Shaikh, the director of the Brookings Doha Center, says Syria’s neighbors are more anxious than ever—and increasingly likely to step in to pursue their own ends. “This is becoming an existential struggle,” Shaikh says.

I understand where all the weapons flowing to the rebels come from and the Russian arms contracts they are obligated to fill?

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 39483753

Syria is already supposed to have operational S-300 systems already. It would have been the fire and radar for the Turkish fighter that was downed. That is why the rebels have no air support, other than a few missiles being thrown in once in a while, like the UN convoy that was missed by a few blocks.

If a system is being implemented it is the same one that defends Moscow as far as being able to track all incoming hostiles, plane or missile and the hardware that comes with that detection system is meant for long range (being able to tell where in Israel the launches took place, or in Turkey) and short range for projectiles within 100KM. The longer range stuff can get them when they are further out or making sure the launcher doesn't ever get reloaded. The last article I read said the S-500 uses hardware that is from the '60's with software and loading the path of a missile or guided bomb with millions of BB sized pellets that will penetrate the warhead if it is a directed energy weapon because the covering facing the ground is very thin and all the 'weight' (DU) is behind the explosive and that forces all the blast towards the 'target' and the DU breaks up into tiny parts that self destruct if the shards that fly to the left and then each explodes on it's own as do more that are tossed high and burst into multiple explosions long after the main charge has been ignited. There could be another reason for those blasts but the shards are clearly visible for a moment and the explosions take place in the same vicinity. Those same shards can be seen in some of the explosions that have taken place in Gaza so the same material is not impossible.

Attacking a food supply depot is a crime against humanity even if it is supplying soldiers with meals. (as does fucking with the water supply which the Rebels did in northern Syria as soon as they captured the dam(s).

They do that with everybody they are against. The Syrian people want the leader they have compared to puppets like Lebanon has been for many years, same with Egypt and Bahrain. There is nothing to envy in any of those places, in fact it is worth resisting that form of leadership. Cuba and Iran and Venezuela are better off today, you can't buy better advertizing than that. Libya isn't such a success story.
