Karlos User ID: 39427535 United Kingdom 05/09/2013 07:19 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I think this is the 8th sighting over UK this yesr.Unprecedented. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 39211793 Not unprecedented at all. As an amateur astronomer, I'm outside at night, looking up, whenever the sky is clear - and I see literally HUNDREDS of meteors per year, with some those being what most would call 'fireball' or 'bolide' meteors. It's a VERY rare night when I don't see any meteors at all. This one is likely to have been an Eta Aquariid - The Eta Aquariid shower is caused by the earth going through a fairly spread-out field of debris left behind by comet 1P/Halley Because of the spread-out nature of the debris, we get a shower that - instead of a sharp peak - gives about a week of pretty good activity, between about the 3rd and 10th of May. It's also common for the Eta Aquariids to throw up quite a few nice fireballs. I've seen 3 myself this last week, plus many, many smaller E-A meteors. The other big shower caused by Halley's comet, is the Orionids in late October. The best meteor activity I've personally ever seen, was the Orionid shower of 2006. I was at a very dark rural site for that one, just a bunch of us laid back in deck-chairs watching the show. We saw more than 30 good strong fireballs within a couple of hours that night. So... 8 sightings... in over 4 months. With this last one coming within a shower period known to give fireballs.... Sorry, but no - Not unprecedented. The main reason more and more of these are being filmed and photographed...? Because these days, everyone and his dog carries a phone capable of video, and/or decent still photography.
