Energy West official: Scratch-and-sniff cards to blame for gas smell in downtown Great Falls
“They were expired, and they were old,” Bohr said. “They threw them into the Dumpsters.”

When the cards were picked up by sanitation trucks and crushed, “It was the same as if they had scratched them.”

Why the heck would you need scratch and sniff cards to know what gas smells like.

I take it on one cooks on a gas stove or has a gas boiler or may be the odd old gas fire.

lol.

This is an interesting topic for me personally
for a different reason than most!

I invented the "scratch-n-sniff" media in
the 70's and I never in my wildest dreams
could have imagined an emergency coming
out of this invention like this one! Wow!
What a trip.
I submitted my proposed invention to the
Hallmark Card Company--who first came out
with the media in a children's book about
gingerbread men. I NEVER RECEIVED ONE PENNY
FROM THE INVENTION/IDEA...but it turned into
a million-dollar industry.
If you are interested in my story I would be
happy to elaborate! lol!
Cheers!

Me too.
Out of this ugliness may come,
Some day, so beautiful a flower,
That men will wonder at that hour,
Remembering smoke and flowerless slum,
And ask-glimpsing the agony
Of the slaves who wrestle to be free-

Yup...It's me.
I decided not to write the story as
an A.C.--I'm having trouble with my keyboard
this A.M. took me awhile to get back to GLP!

Hmmmmm.....a FART scratch and sniff.
That's pretty funny!! Actually...the one
I would have LOVED to see created in that
media would be the entire "alcoholic theme"
with Jack Nicholson as its spokesman (lol!)

Jack: "Ah....the "sniff" of good
Irish whiskey....can't beat that one!

TheyOFFDtheGUY

It really isn't a very exciting story to tell
you the god's honest truth. I wish it had
some in's and out's and read like some big
Steven King horror/mystery....since the
majority of fragrances that I have watched
evolve over the years since the 70's
inspiration has not followed my "vision"
for the product! I was pretty happy--though
when I saw AVON pick up the idea for the
first fragrance samples. My favorite is
Este Lauder's "Youth Dew"....That fragrance
is straight from the nose of GOD.

I was a struggling student at a university
back east....my major was pre-nursing/chemistry
at the time and I was married with a young
daughter aged 3 yrs. old. I did some part-time
work at the chem labs at the university and
came into the lab one morning after a really
funny situation that came up with my daughter
(I'll call her Kelly--not her name)....
Kelly had decided that her favorite food that
week was GARLIC BREAD....She couldn't get
enough garlic bread...she wanted garlic on
her potatoes...on her broccoli...everything
had to have sprinkled garlic flakes! It was
a riot. (Kids do this by the way....they get
obcessive about things they are learning
about.) So....I'm telling my professor about
how she's been eating all this garlic and
runs her tricycle into the corner of the
garage door--crashes it pretty hard and gets
a bruise on her face.
So Kelly is crying pretty hard and tho she
wasn't one to fuss (she was a great baby!)
this hurt pretty bad and it scared her.
I'm close to her face checking out her scratches
and the bruise--trying to wipe her tears
and comfort her....when this GARLIC FRAGRANCE
WAFTS UP IN THE BREEZE....
I'm thinking....."This is STRANGE....where is
this coming from?" I put one of the many tears
falling down her cheeks on my finger and....
well...you know where it was--THE GARLIC WAS
IN HER TEARS!
I started kidding around about her having
"garlic tears" and it really made her stop to
think about her favorite food...and not her
boo-boo. She actually was laughing and the
whole accident was out of her mind.
The rest of that afernoon--Kelly and I spent
at her art table drawing funny pictures about
"garlic tears"--we really had fun with it.
So...I asked my chemistry professor...
"Do you think that there is any way to put
a chemical compound on to a paper as a
"delivery" device for a fragrance...I want
to have my daughter help me design a kids
book about "garlic tears!"
I think we spent about a 3 or 4 weeks trying
different compounds to isolate crushed garlic
into an easy to deliver fixative so that it
could be gently rubbed and the fragrance
would come up.
Long story short--we wrote the story and
put a sample in the back of the proposal
we wrote...had it professionally typed and
we illustrated it the best we could. It
would be basically Kelly's story and the
idea of carrying a fragrance sample in a
child's book to enhance the storyline.
We sent it to Hallmark cards....that
was it! They took about 2 months to have
the children's book about gingerbread men
in their stores--a really big deal as
they also had a "demo-station" at our
locat Hallmark store that was a stand-alone
display as an intro to this new line of
Hallmark books. The cards came much later.

I can't remember if I was upset because we
never did have any royalties from this
invention...it was obvious to me that with
the close timing of our lab work and the
children's story we wrote in the proposal
....SOMEONE at Hallmark was very excited
about the idea and RAN WITH IT.

I'm sure they just threw our proposal in
the trash and got an independent contractor
to develope the idea. We weren't smart enough
to copyright anything--we just TRUSTED that
if they found it interesting we would hear
back from them. Never heard one word.

YOU CAN COPYRIGHT SOMETHING EASILY NOW--
....just take photos/lab formula/invention
schematics...and description of your
idea/development efforts and MAIL SEVERAL
COPIES OF IT TO YOURSELF WITH A
"RETURN RECEIPT/REGISTERED MAIL" DELIVERY.
Some folks have had success with this in
court without an attorney! I should have
thought of that back then! My bad!
Anyways....much later I heard that an
inventor who designed those automatic
wrenches and sent his idea to SEARS actually
won a large settlement from them....but it
took years and attorney fees--something that
a young college student with a family just
wouldn't have the cash to do.
There you have it. We OWE OUR THANKS FOR
"SCRATCH-N-SNIFF" TO GARLIC!
End of story!
Cheers
SK

GREAT STORY!!! and YES ... I am sure your proposed story WAS the reason why they came out with their Scratch and Sniff book.

Too bad you didn't shop your book others though!! You may have been able to actually sell the book as a Children's Book and become a Children's Book Writer, with the scratch and sniff being only a minor part of endeavor. You definitely have a creative mind.
