Geek help please - Windows 7 HP computer Driver?
Not reading SD cards any longer. Worked fine for years. Need no BS link to fix. Valuable pics on cards. Links want money and MS is no help. Thank you in advance. Free link and plain English for the not so savvy.

It actually sounds like a hardware problem. Try someone else's usb based sd card reader. Do other usb devices work? e.g. usb mouse, or usb flash drive etc?
With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible

Go and buy a card reader that you plug into a usb port, or do it through the camera, slow but it gets it done. You need a new tower by the sound of it.

On some old PCI vid cards cleaning the contacts with a pencil's eraser worked. Perhaps a bounce sheet with some thin plastic strip would allow you to clean the chip-reader's contacts. I doubt compressed air would clean the contacts but it would get any dust out.

Help me clarify here. Is this a built in card reader or a reader your plugging in to a usb port that is no longer working?

This card reader is built in to 4 trillion dollar HP laptop. Again, worked fine at least 3 years. Yes, some sarcasm here do to frustration.

Yeah. Sounds like the reader failed. All the files will still be on the card. No biggie.

Ok questions dont want to give you bad advice. Is the card your trying to get it to read sdhc by chance and did those cards read in it before. Do you have a different format card you can try in it? This is important because many of those built in readers will not read sdhc especially if its a little bit older computer. Insert a card click your start button then computer and let me know if it shows up at all there or in the tray to safetly remove.

Could be dust or some such thing in the slot. Id try blowing the slot out with a fast blast of compressed, air.

If that dont work.

I agree with those that say it sounds like a hardware error, but.

Unless an update messed with the driver.

You could go to the manufactuers website click on support then drivers and then enter the model number and download the latest driver for the card reader.

Some printers have the card readers built into them. Shot in the dark but check your printer.

If its the tiny sd card some phones come with a usb adapter in the phone box with the cords and stiff. If you have a recent phone check the box for it.

If that doesnt work the newegg link is the winning idea.

Depending on the camera, you may even be able to connect the camera to your computer with a usb cable to access the pictures on the card. I know you didn't mention a camera, but I am guessing since you said the card has pictures on it.

You could try reading this topic:

[link to answers.microsoft.com]

On my Windows 7 PC I have a problem with the SD card reading service not running when I plug the SD card in. If I reboot the PC with the SD card plugged in, it then works.
(Or I can manually turn 2 services on, "hidserv" and "SCardSvr" using task manager)

Good luck!
