Programs designed to prepare youth for the real world sound nice, but do no such thing, kind of like most college-degree programs- and job-corps will expose her to a pretty disadvantaged side of life-it's very rough...(this is my opinion) the best training for job readiness is to get a job, Gap sounds nice. Let her understand the value of money and what it takes to earn it, that's all. |

If you go in wanting to learn a trade that will get you a blue collar job when you graduate you and willing to do the work you will be fine, If you go in because your wanting to find new party buddies expect to live that life |
WoodBlockPrintery User ID: 3772958 United States 12/07/2013 07:57 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | so my 19 yo girl cousin is coming to live with me and wants to go to Job Corp. The website looks promising and awesome, Quoting: .:*Buttercup*:. but when i googled "job corp sucks", i saw nightmare stories about the place being a drug infested, violent, theft riddled, juvenile delinquent, gang infested, "fresh out of prison" type place. and most of the grads are unemployed. and it has a 75% dropout rate... i really want her to be able to live on her own, and get "life skills" there. i want her to pursue a cna program which seems to be the best program they have to offer and i'm pretty sure she can get a job from that certificate. she's open to any field, and i don't want her to go into the military where alot of grads go.( no offence to military, she's just not tough enough for that- total respect to military people) it also bothers me that grads from the program only make about $9/ hour, when she can work at the Gap and make $11 starting.in the program, she stays in a dorm, 3 meals, and gets paid only $25/per week for 28 hours of physical labor at the school. (i put myself through college working part time jobs, and have no debt, so i know this alternative can be done) or get her real estate licence and make $60k per house sold.( and just screw "college" altogether) we're in los angeles. the only Job Corp places near us are downtown la and long beach, and i'd hate to see her actually live in either of those two crime infested areas. i just can't see those places being a good place to "grow up" for an inexperienced teen. i know both cities well, and i'm a pretty tough chick...don't know if its cool for a newbie to be in those places at such a fragile age. ANY ADVISE would be appreicated. thanks. anyone have any experience or thoughts with this? Have her invoke RULE #17 and Pray real hard. That should do the trick |
Sikhed User ID: 45881902 United States 12/07/2013 07:58 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | My son is in it right now. Tongue Point, Astoria, Oregon. It's a former Vietnam era boot camp the army used to use to train & send soldiers off. So the facilities, decor, and atmosphere are definitely "boot camp". Theft, "entitlement mentality", and drop-out rate is high. But if your cousin goes there to learn, and is determined to use the system as designed, she'll go far. My son will graduate in January, and has been offered a job in some government union (plastery and masonry) He'll be making more money than I do. There are issues however. My (and my son's) research shows the quality of various facilities vary greatly. Some are good, some bad, and some outright horrible. Check the reputation of the place she's thinking about attending first!!! :doom360: |
