TEPCO seeks permission to dump groundwater from Fukushima plant into ocean: goodbye global fisheries... ELE
[snip]

National May. 14, 2013 - 07:00AM JST ( 18 )
TOKYO —
Officials from Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) on Monday met with a Fukushima fisheries cooperative to seek its members’ permission to dump groundwater from the stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the ocean.
The contaminated water storage has been a problem since early in the accident. TEPCO officials acknowledged last month that a lack of storage space has become a “crisis.” TEPCO has promised to speed up building more reliable steel tanks and eventually empty the underground tanks.

[end snip]

So, in violation of every Global nuclear treaty they want permission to spill it (not that it hasn't already been ongoing), into the Global oceans, due to storage issues......

They promise only to dump low radioactive water ;)

I have nothing more to say.

Some kool-aid drinker left a comment below the article stating...

Bag it up and drop it in the Marianas Trench. The Pacific Ocean is vast and a few hundred thousand tons of contaminated water would be insignificant.

This is our last play to call an end to the bullshit..... sadly, i see nothing coming of it... like it hasn't leaked since 2011..... c'mon......

but not to flagrantly say they are putting it into the oceans......

get the fuck off the seafood.... it will spread from there through bio-accumulation....

who want's them to take a risk and pour it into the ocean?.... hands up?..... this should be viral news.....

it is against international law is what they are doing... period...... and they want permission to do it? even the fukushima fishermen say no.....

Hell, they feel its Americas problem for having sold it to them.

In a sick way, it may have been intentional. Kind of like small pox/bio war used on the Native American Indians. Consider this, where are they dumping it again? Where will it flow?

Therein lies your answer.

just out of curiosity, what should they do with it?

the whole situation is completely fucked, but how do you stop it once it has happened? you can only contain so much water before you run out of room to put it.

is there some ultra expensive cutting edge way [or cheap, or any?] to make it pure water again that they are being to cheap or irresponsible to use it?

no good will come of it any way you put it, but what do you believe they should be doing with it that is reasonable and possible? we are past the point of prevention and complaints/outrage are accomplishing nothing. do you have a suggestion that could help?

what they should have done is long past... i'm just an observer now... and keep telling it how i see it, because it's no news.....

possible solutions?... when they keep referring to 'future technologies' makes my skin crawl....

it's not us.. it is the generations to come.... our oceans, our food... how narrow minded have we been...

pouring it into the oceans is not a solution, it is suicidal in the long run.....

They should have to dump it far out at sea where it becomes diluted quick and harmless.
They shouldn't just be able to squirt it out near the coast that is silly.

I mean 'sure' to 'them' this would have a 'minimal' impact, if they were to do it just once. And even then under my views, this is inconceivable. But, what will they continue to do with the 'new' water they use in the cooling pools? Will they dump that too?

And what then ten years down the road because it still will be a problem then, will we have continued dumping it into the ocean for those ten years?

The line of logic here is stupefying at best.

pouring it in the ocean is also not a choice, it is inevitable :( have to keep the fuel cool and they keep adding water to the system, but not storage. even if storage kept pace with additional water japan would eventually be a giant radioactive swimming pool and the water would still end up in the ocean...

damned if we do, damned if we dont... maybe we are simply damned.
