So im going hiking for the next two weeks.....
Think its a bad time? I'm going to be roughly 750 miles from home. I can just picture it, I'm on the trail and finally make it to the next town just to find out there has been a massive EMP or solar flare that has wiped out all electronics and transportation, well that is my luck anyway. I have been planning this section hike of the Appalachian trail for the past year and i know my luck, if anything is going to happen its going to be while im on the trail, however i can not let the things i worry about control my life, this is something i want to do and im going to do it.

Just in case though i do have my BOB packed and in my vehicle so if need be i can hike back and grab whatever long term supplies i may need, and the nature of my hike i should be better prepared than most people would be so i suppose i'll be alright.

Anybody have any tips? Any other AT hikers out there?

It's every backpackers fantasy, and who knows? Someday it will happen.

Here's a tip: Watch out for bears, they're coming out of hibernation hungry, and after they eat your food they'll eat you.

Yes it is one of our fantasies lol, at the very least maybe this trip will inspire me to write a book, i am in need of some new inspiration. As for the bears, hopefully the conditioning i have been putting myself through will enable me to outrun them lol.

I hear they are also pretty good at climbing trees...so hand to hand combat it is....j/k of course but if it comes to that i wouldnt really have much of a choice...might as well go down fighting.

Honestly im more worried about mountain lions and bob cats.

Re: So im going hiking for the next two weeks.....
what section are you going to hike?

some advice:

pack light...

no electronics, turn your phone off and leave it off unless you want to check in with family when you get to a town..

enjoy the outdoors and only worry about the woods, fuck the concrete jungle...

dont spend too much time hiking with others.. Do it for yourself and spend time with yourself alone in the woods..

Dont worry about the bears or any of the animals on the AT... nuthing will hurt you!!

unless your going up north this time of year then worry about the black flies!!!

your alot safer in the woods then in civilization

dont do more then 15 miles a day the first week, give it some time for your feet to get used to it.. they will thank you..

dont wear boots, just sneekers, your feet will thank you for that also..

I could go on for ever... just have fun and enjoy the outdoors

Thanks for the advice, im going to be hiking from Hot Springs to Erwin to start off, since this is my first real extended hike and i dont have a set goal or time frame im just going to take it easy and go at my own pace. My pack is as light as could make it right now with just the bare essentials but im sure my first few days on the trail will be a learning experience on what i really will need and what is just dead weight.

My smart phone is staying in my car and not going with me, i got a prepaid phone that will be shut off while im hiking and used only for emergencies or to check in with my family. I really need to get away from facebook, and all this stuff for a few weeks lol.

Hot Springs to Erwin is a beautiful section, great choice..

Its the perfect time of year for that part

Just pay attention to whats in your pack that you are not using and send it home when your in a town. You will learn quick what you dont need, my pack weight was 18 pounds without food for most of my hike.

I was not joking about the sneakers :)
they are light and dry quick when they get wet
boots are stiff and heavy and dont let your feet breath
take care of your feet and you will do fine
boots take out the most people in the early days of the trail.

and there will be many others out there, try not to get involved with there problems, do this for yourself and you will have a great time.

I threw hiked it in 05, do you have any questions?
Ill do my best to help you...

I appreciate the help and im jealous, i wish i could do a thru hike but with work and personal responsibilities i wont be able to do that anytime soon. Im going to be checking in with bluff mountain outfitters before i leave, i talked to them last week and they were very helpful.

I do have a question, trekking poles...should i bring them or not bother with the extra weight? Also for a camping at night, will anyone bother me if i dont make it to a shelter in time for nightfall, like say i need to set up somewhere off the trail for the night, is that looked down upon at all? Ive hiked the AT up in NY in my hometown but never stayed the night on it. I'm just trying to be respectful of the trail and of course anything i bring in will be going back out with me.

poles are a must, think of them like 4 wheel drive on a truck. they will help you up and down hills and save you from falling. I highly recommend them..

you can stealth camp anywhere for the most part along the trail. just walk a few feet off the trail and you will be fine. Its going to mostly depend on where the water is where you will sleep for the night. Make sure you set up your camp near water. I didnt always sleep at shelter areas, but there is always water where i slept..

most hikers and myself wouldn't carry much water during the day (Under 2 liters). you just drink a few gallons at camp at night and some more in the morning.. Water is heavy and you dont want to be lugging it all around with you during the day. Pick up a large Platypus water tank for camp at night to treat all your food and drinking water at once..

[link to cascadedesigns.com]

unpack all your food from the store boxes and packaging and place it in plastic bags.. eat snickers like vitamin pills and eat up a jar of peanut butter every 4 days.. pasta is good for dinner..

Thanks sounds good, i allready took all my food out of the packaging and used some heavy duty zip lock bags, and seperated the bags, one for breakfast and beverages, one for snacks and one for dinner stuff. I also packed a bag of whey protien to mix in with my morning meal/drinks. I did some test runs with my pack and the food and water is what weighs it down the most Without the food and water it feels like a feather. I appreciate all the help, i stopped by the AT in my town a little while ago and met a hiker going south, i cant wait to get out there!

Agreed, i made a decision a long time ago that no matter how paranoid i may get about certain things i would not let them stop me from living my life, otherwise what is the point. If somethings happens then it happens and i deal with the situation accordingly.

this is the best time of year so the shelters might be full, so there's nothing wrong with camping on the trail, you might be disappointed if you are looking forward to a shelter and it's all full.
