Mexico volcano spews ash on towns

"Last week, Popocatepetl covered several towns in ash, including the capital of Puebla state."

Authorities have raised the alert level to "Yellow Phase Three", the fifth of a seven-stage warning system, restricting access to an area of 12km around the volcano while preparing evacuation routes and shelters.

Hundreds of soldiers have been sent to the area in case the Popocatepetl volcano does erupt. The evacuation of up to 11,000 local residents is needed.

This makes me think that Popocatepetl is going to blow up big time.

Hopefully it will blow off a few syllables.

"The high alert at Mexico’s Popocatépetl remains in place as the restless Mexican volcano still shows signs that new magma is at the surface, meaning a larger explosion could occur if pressures builds under the summit crater."

Excellent, witty new article today with spectacular pic from yesterday.

At this moment the live cams are showing Popo enshrouded with cloud cover.

Re: Mexico on alert as Popocatepetl volcano blows steam, Update 2 Alaska Volcano
May 17 10:00 h (May 17, 15:00 GMT)

In the last 24 hours the monitoring system of Popocatepetl volcano registered 31 exhalations of low to moderate intensity, which were accompanied by emissions of water vapor, gases and small amounts of ash.

Aditionally, at 22:14 h a strong explosion was registered, which caused the emission of incandescent fragments on all the volcano´s flanks to distances of 1,500 m from the crater, as well as an ash column at least 3 km in height which was carried northeast by the prevailing winds.

The cloud cover on the upper part of the volcano prevented seeing the crater during the eruption, although incandescent fragments could be seen rolling downhill.
