Indeed, as soon as we got wind of the strike a few weeks ago, we have been getting extra "just in case". A Canadian with out alcohol for a long weekend is a very bitchy individual!

AR1748 has produced an X1.7-class flare (0217 UT on May 13), an X2.8-class flare (1609 UT on May 13), an X3.2-class flare (0117 UT on May 14), and an X1-class flare (0152 on May 15).

sun is super bright here in Ontario Canada.
wind has really kicked up, which to me, is weird, as there's barely any clouds in the sky.
and considering Environment Canada was saying it would only be 21 degrees today, it's already 25, but it does feel much hotter in the sun.

It's the earth facing effect. For months now, almost every big flaring sunspots have been quite while facing earth. There is no particular reason, it just happens this way... I'm not saying it can't happend.

Even now, it is slightly earth facing. We'd likely see some impact from a large energy release (glancing), assuming it was AR1748 that popped off. It will become more and more earth facing hour by hour.

Have a look at solarham.net The active spot is 1748 and it is slightly earth facing now and will be for the throughout the week. It is still beta-gamma-delta (which means there is a lot of magnetic mixing going on which causes the flares) 1745 also has some mixing going on as it is beta-gamma. It hasn't thrown any flares though...yet...and it is completely earth facing now.

So, from now on, things may get considerably more interesting!!
