Saaaay - a quick calculation - if 30 CPM is normal background which is 0.1 microSieverts per hour.
170,000 CPM is 5600 microSieverts per hour*, assuming that the meter is not overloaded?

Who knows? 1 mm Al attenuates some betas, but produces Bremstrahlung x rays .... hence the lower reading ...

You get the picture.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 987367

Ughhh 5600microS? That yields a 560mRem/hr point source? That guy might want to leave that area. 4 hours would put you over the legal limit of 2rem/yr.

Someone give me the idiot's explanation of what I just watched. Lots of radiation, somewhere in Japan, we're all gonna die. Anything else?

The idiots explanation is that we don't know the correct condition of the meters, are they working correct, where was this black stuff at, could this guy be pulling our leg, why has not thousands of Japanese people died from this yet, why has the video makers dick not fallen off yet, why is my sea food safe, why has CNN not reported this..

How is this doom exactly? Not like its a harmful amount of radiation. With readings like this, it would take like 25,000 days of constant exposure before 1 in 1000 ppl could develop cancer.

300,000 milliRem (mRem)
3,000 milliSievert (mSv)

Expected 50% death from radiation
400,000 milliRem (mRem)
4,000 milliSievert (mSv)

Measuring Radiation with a Geiger Counter CPM

What is CPM (also the ‘number’ used on the Radiation Network )?

CPM (counts per minute) is a measure of radioactivity, a unit of measurement for a Geiger counter. Technically, “It is the number of atoms in a given quantity of radioactive material that are detected to have decayed in one minute.”

Most Geiger counters are calibrated to Cs137 (Cesium).

1,200 CPM on the meter (for Cs137) is about 1 mR/hr (milliRad per hour).
120 CPM on the meter (for Cs137) is about 1 uSv/hr (microSievert per hour).

What are acceptable levels? Could someone please give a quick style radiation course for dummies?
 Quoting: Clovis

Most excellent question.

To convert from counts per minute (CPM) to milli-Roentgen/hr (mR/hr) you have to make some assumptions.

Assuming a Cesium 137 sensitivity conversion, 1,200 CPM = 1 mR/hr.

So... the immediate danger threshold is between 50 and 100 Rads. That's when you start loosing your cookies and hair.

We saw 165,000 CPM in the video. That's 137 mR/hr or 0.12 Rads per hour. At that rate you would reach the 50 Rad zone in 17 days. You would reach your average yearly exposure in 3 hours.

This Fukushima disaster is serious business, and I wonder if large parts of Japan will be inhabitable from a generational standpoint.

More bad news: Internal exposure to hot particules is estimated to be 300 - 500x more damaging than external exposure.

From Modern Survival Blog:

[link to modernsurvivalblog.com]

"Days compared with the avg. annual human exposure (U.S.)
207 (at 100 CPM)
42 (at 500 CPM)
14 (at 1,500 CPM)
2 (at 10,000 CPM)

Days to receive dose for increase cancer risk of 1 in a 1,000
432 (at 100 CPM)
86 (at 500 CPM)
28 (at 1,500 CPM)
4 (at 10,000 CPM)

Days for earliest onset of radiation sickness
25,937 (at 100 CPM)
5,187 (at 500 CPM)
1,729 (at 1,500 CPM)

6000 cpm = drop dead on the spot

Also, the meter jumps from 6000 cpm to 60? Dude was messing with it. Even at 60cpm, which is probably typical for Japan, both meters don't match up. Next would be, what were they set on? beta? Gamma? Alpha?

Workers and researchers have worked (very briefly) in areas of 5-10 thousand R/h That's Roentgens Per Hour (far beyond what can be registered within scale on this detector) Many are still alive today. Exposure Time, distance from source, cumulative dose, dose localization, internal ingestion from particulate matter or via foodstuffs all must be taken into consideration.

I'm not trying to make less of what is shown here.. I would be making this video with a respirator, covers and at the end of a long stick to be sure.

Just helps to have context.

Thanks!

No, my PRM8000 goes into the 700 CPM range when flying to Korea.. This is *the new* normal.

"do you mean .500 cpm"

CPM is a measure of Counts Per Min, it cannot be expressed as a floating point number.. it is an absolute whole number.

500 CPM means that the pancake or tube registered 8.3 particles impacting the detector's sensor every second.
