So Vegemite is used like butter, not jam, on toast... Lesson learned by a Yank
My 15 year old daughter and her boyfriend watched an old Men At Work video on the Youtubes, and asked me if I'd ever had Vegemite. I had a college dormmate who let me sample her's back in the day, so it'd been 20 years or more since I'd had any.

We bought a jar of it on Amazon, spread that shit nice and thick on toast, and promptly thought it was the gnastiest stuff evah (to quote my daughter).

I did some research into it, asking WHY do Aussies like it when it tastes so gross. Turns out I was using it as a jelly spread when I should have been scraping it thin like butter.

Went back for Round 2 tonight, and admittedly it was much better this time. Washed down with a cold German pils beer, it was pretty awesome actually.

We do this same with peanut butter and our kids. No nut allergies here. We also send them out to eat plants right out of the garden without washing them, oh and dirt....

No it is great. The BEST way to eat it is when the toast is hot and the butter meltls in the toast then spread the vegemite and it mingles with the butter (or margarine) and you can have it thick.i like it think.

vegemite is just squashed up yeast left over from making beer. NOBODY is allergic to beer!!! (i could be wrong)

at first, spread it thin. when you get used to it, you can thicken it up a bit.

you butter toast first then use vegemite sparingly - more so again if its marmite which is better imo.

One of the courses I took while working at HP was taught by an Aussie employee that we would bring to the states every few months.

On the second day of the class, he brought in a tube of Vegemite for us to try. No one else liked it but me, and he gave me the tube to keep since there was no purpose in returning home with it.

Dude - that stuff rocked. It's awesome, but salty as all get out. Sure enough tho by the end of the first week, I could layer it pretty well and loved it.

Really great on toast with a good hefe to wash it down. I wish we could get Vegemite here as it's a great source of iodine and other vitamins and minerals.

It's weird how some people LOVE Vegemite/Marmite (me included) & some people HATE it.

But yeah, spread very thinly onto buttered bread or toast!

Marmite, Vegemite and Bovril are all pretty much the same - as a breakfast spread on toast - ok, but not everyone's cup of tea.

Teaspoon of the goop dissolved in hot water = refreshing (ish) hot drink in winter.

Bonus fact - Mix with equal part of clover (or whatever) honey and scrape a thin layer on your toast. Nice with Coffee, even nicer with Milo.

Ugh, recycled beer yeast. There is almost no way to make that stuff taste good unless you were raised on it. It's like fatback to Southerners; Spam to the Brits; Cicadas to the Chinese... I understand folks native to that taste like it, but it is HELL IN A JAR!!!

Best with thick butter, tiny amount Vegemite.

Pure MSG. Kills brain cells, because it's an excitotoxin.

The best way to eat Vegemite is spread thinly on hot buttered toast with a slice of cheese and fresh tomato. Served with a cup of tea. Very comforting on a cold winters day.

Re: So Vegemite is used like butter, not jam, on toast... Lesson learned by a Yank
VEGEMITE spread is virtually fat-free, with a mere 40kJ in a 5g serve, and is the perfect accompaniment for a wholesome, breakfast, lunch or snack. It’s far more tooth and gum friendly than jams or choc nut spreads, without compromising on taste. In fact, its unique and delicious flavour is what distinguishes the VEGEMITE brand.

This is some audacity though... comparing it to Nutella.
