Re: Homeless in Dallas Texas
Anyone else wondering how this guy's wandering around town, carrying 100lbs of gear, updating his GLP thread if he's homeless? If the answer is "I'm posting from my fancy smartphone with the unlimited data plan", maybe that should of been one of the material expenses you cut back on before you hit these hard times.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1393772

your just being plain mean. He told you he is at the library, which is smart. Have you considered going back to school? The school grants would help out a lot and you would be improving your skills. Then you can find a room to rent also from the schoolboards posted everywhere on campus. The Salvation Army will give you food and 211.org will have housing suggestions to look into. Couch serfing isn't a bad option either. What about family? can they help. And for getting to Iowa try the local travel aide office.

Not homeless anymore, just dealing with other crap. If you read a few posts up you'll learn more about me and this thread

Re: Homeless in Dallas Texas
Just an update for those still following my story.

I've been in New York 3.5 weeks now, and my health is pretty good and it's nice that the weather is warming here despite an insane amount of rainfall.

I am pissed off at how difficult it is to try to re-establish my identity in a new state. When I left Texas, the only piece of ID I had was my current and valid texas driver's license. I knew I would need more than that to get a NY license, so I went to the local social security office, showed them my license, and within five days I had a replacement social security card at my new address.

So I went to the DMV with my license, ss card, a letter from the social security office with my new address on it, and mail from my former employer with my new address on it. I am then told that my license could not be expected because Texas does not have an "issue" date on their drivers license, and furthermore none of the ID I have--including license--is proof of date of birth. For that they want either a birth certificatte or a passport, the first of which i lost long ago, and the later of which I had never applied for. They would--the kind souls that they are (note sarcasm)accept my drivers license (but not as proof of dob) if i had a certifiedd driving record with my license. wtf?!?!

So I have mailed a form to the texas dmv along with their fee for a copy of my driving record and am now awaiting that.

But still, I have no birth certificatte to prove my date of birth, and in order to get that I have to send away a form, along a copy of my DL AND TWO letters from a government agency addressed to me, whcih i don't have, and a $45 fee, which i don't have either. So there's my current plight. The beuroacry is maddening sometimes.

The probem is I have no credit card. And you have to have a credit card whose billing address and name MATCHES the record of the individual being requested. So no credit card, no vitalchek. I had looked at their website already.

Also, I vote for cashing out the retirement.

Keeping it in an IRA just makes it easier for the bank to take it from you in the event of a collapse. And then you have no money.

Use that money now, set aside a little to pay for taxes on the backend, (because you will get taxed *again*, I know, I did it), but you will stil have the ability to take care of what needs taking care of NOW.

But when you reinvent yourself, have a PLAN. Don't do it until you have a PLAN (and follow it). Otherwise you will nickel and dime yourself back into the same situation. Good luck!

labor ready will always hire anybody I would suggest starting there then building a resume off of that
I came to texas with 2 bags and no home and now i'm no longer living check to check. You just gotta pull and squeeze for what you want. Make your skill a self employed job on your resume. even if you haven't done it professionally. Jobs just want to know your physically and mentally able to perform the job

I'm glad it's so hard for you to get a new license OP. Just think how easy it would be for a terrorist to get away with getting proper ID if they didn't have all these hassles in place. You should be grateful.

Also you don't need a license to live. There is such a thing as working under the table for cash, and finding a landlord who doesn't require a background check and other things.

I need a license if I want to purchase a car, register that car, get insurance and drive in this state. I need that ID to open a savings/checking account. And I understand that ther should be some things to make it difficult to get an ID...BUT I have been driving for 25 years, I have a SS card and #. SURELY in this day and age this can be proven without forcing a person in distress to jump through hoops.

Re: Homeless in Dallas Texas
I feel for you with the ID mess you're in, I had a similar situation a year or two ago, I was unemployed and dealing with the unemployment bureaucracy. They had several programs I was interested in, like education opportunities and support for business startups, but I had to have a social security card. Mine had been stolen 30 (35?) years previously and I had never needed it for anything until then.

But my name on my SS card/account was a nickname - I was 14 and had never used my formal given name for anything up to that point, it was the seventies and things were a lot different then. And that nickname had never been used for anything else legally except SS.

So I had to clear that up to get a new SS card, but my name on my birth certificate had been spelled wrong, it had always been wrong, I have never spelled my name legally the way it was spelled on my birth certificate because that's not how it's spelled.

So I had to get my birth certificate corrected, in another state, in order to do so I had to PHYSICALLY MAIL them my passport, which was my only form of ID.

So I had to get a state ID card, so that I wouldn't be without ID while my passport was in limbo, and in case it got lost.

Cost me about 135.00 and it took way too long for me to take advantage of any of the state programs I was interested in.

the only good thing was that it all needed to get sorted eventually and I was glad I dealt with that red tape while I wasn't working cause it was really a big fucking hassle and super frustrating.

BEST OF LUCK TO YOU!

Thanks, right now I'm trying to figure out where to get some chow. Sadly it seems the city has cracked down on people feeding the homeless.

do u realize this was one of the sins of sodom and gomorrah? it was a crime if you fed or helped homeless!

The probem is I have no credit card. And you have to have a credit card whose billing address and name MATCHES the record of the individual being requested. So no credit card, no vitalchek. I had looked at their website already.

yea my son just graduated and cant get his birth certificate unless he has a state ID and you cant get a state ID without a birth certificate. TN law. So Im a little befuddled too.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 37548997

Good suggestions but they don't totally resolve the catch-22 I'm caught up in. First, I don't have the cash right now. Second, when i DO GET my distribution check, I'm going to need a valid new york state license to open a checking account here so i can deposit it. And I can't get that license without FIRST having my birth certificate.

It's like you can't get this because you don't have that and that. And you can't get that because you don't have this and that.

you'll pay, but you should be able to get your cheque cashed for a fee
 Quoting: _richard_

Besides real banks, there are very FEW check cashing places in NY. The reason is new your state law limits them to a 2% fee. And even if I did find one, I really don't want to have to give up 2% on an 8k check.

OP, there are check cashing places all over the City. Especially uptown Manhattan and in Queens, Bklyn, the Bronx.

I haven't read the whole thread, but understand you landed in NYC. Where?

I'm going to an appointment tomorrow on the upper west side and can give you the dough to get your birth certificate.

Let me know where you are and we can work-out the particulars.

Wow, thanks for that nice offer, but I think I'm a bit too far from where you are in New York. The generosity of GLP people never ceases to amaze me though!

I'm sorry to hear that, OP. No wonder you haven't found any check cashing joints. They're still wondering if "Dewey Won" up there.

You must have a good reason for being upstate. I do know that NYC would provide a wealth of resources to change your situation and you'd get on your feet pretty damn quick here.

In any event, should you ever get down to the City, feel free to shoot me a pm and I can show you around.

Yeah, the reason i'm here is I had an old friend sitting on 210 acres of land who offered me a place to stay and good food in echange for helping him with some construction projects he's doing on his property.

I'll be sure to do that. It's been a long time since I've seen the city (I'm originally from long island) but last time I saw the city was in 1990.
