homelessguy92 User ID: 40373762 United States 06/18/2013 10:39 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | So as of today I am officially homeless. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 5574349 I won't bore you all with long sob stories. About a year ago lost my job of twelve years, couldn't find new work, made some bad financial choices, and today I sit in the public library on my old laptop typing away as all my posessions lay in three small suitcases very close to where I am sitting. I think this might possibly be the worst place to be homless, given the horrible heat. So I have seventy-five cents to my name, am not sure where I'll be putting my head down to sleep tonight, and was wondering if anyone else out there has been in a similar prediciment. I'll update my story here as I can. Maybe a few people will find it interesting. Texas is hell even when you're not homeless. Looking back, you'll wish you'd bought a bus ticket to a better state. Read the thread :) I haven't been in texas for almost a month now. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 41908680 Thailand 06/18/2013 10:44 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Two pieces of good news in my life for anyone who continues to read this thread. Quoting: homelessguy92 (1) My foot continues to heal from the gout attack, and I've been able to take some nice walks into the forest. (2) I got a piece of mail forwarded to me from the company I used to work for. It turns out I had some money vested into a retirement plan. Not a 401K, but something like it called a Cash Balance plan that, I guess, was entirely funded by the company since I never made contribution. I guess it works that every so often they placed a % of my salary into the plan. Anyway, the letter basically said that I have about $10,000. Imagine my surprise. Call me stupid for not keeping up on these things and be aware of it before, but oh well. So now I have to make a decission. I can tap that money and have a check sent to me BUT I would be penalized 20% because I'm not 59.5 years of age, or I could open a bank account where I am and roll the money into an IRA. Right now I have a place to live for the forseeable future, I have food, I have a LITTLE bit of money for basic living expenses. What I would really like to do is tap that money, and try to use it to invest into myself, reinvent myself if you will, and see if I can make it translate into a skill that will earn me some more money. I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet, but for all the people here who have been encouraging and and said keep your head up and something good will happen, I'm hoping this may be that sign. The penalty is only 10% and if you are smart take out less than the minimum tax bracket that is all you will pay which IMHO is a pretty good deal. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 23400158 United States 06/18/2013 10:45 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Just an update for those still following my story. Quoting: homelessguy92 I've been in New York 3.5 weeks now, and my health is pretty good and it's nice that the weather is warming here despite an insane amount of rainfall. I am pissed off at how difficult it is to try to re-establish my identity in a new state. When I left Texas, the only piece of ID I had was my current and valid texas driver's license. I knew I would need more than that to get a NY license, so I went to the local social security office, showed them my license, and within five days I had a replacement social security card at my new address. So I went to the DMV with my license, ss card, a letter from the social security office with my new address on it, and mail from my former employer with my new address on it. I am then told that my license could not be expected because Texas does not have an "issue" date on their drivers license, and furthermore none of the ID I have--including license--is proof of date of birth. For that they want either a birth certificatte or a passport, the first of which i lost long ago, and the later of which I had never applied for. They would--the kind souls that they are (note sarcasm)accept my drivers license (but not as proof of dob) if i had a certifiedd driving record with my license. wtf?!?! So I have mailed a form to the texas dmv along with their fee for a copy of my driving record and am now awaiting that. But still, I have no birth certificatte to prove my date of birth, and in order to get that I have to send away a form, along a copy of my DL AND TWO letters from a government agency addressed to me, whcih i don't have, and a $45 fee, which i don't have either. So there's my current plight. The beuroacry is maddening sometimes. " WHOOPATEE-AY-YO " " GIT ALONG, LITTLE DOGGIES " " IT'S YOUR MISFORTUNE AND NONE OF MY OWN " " WHOOPATEE-AY-YO " " GET ALONG, LITTLE DOGGIES " >>>>>>>" FOR YOU KNOW NEW YORK "<<<<<<< " WILL BE YOUR NEW HOME " |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 5574349 Thanks, right now I'm trying to figure out where to get some chow. Sadly it seems the city has cracked down on people feeding the homeless. same reason they put up signs saying not to feed the wildlife at parks...the animals grow dependent on handouts and won't fend for themselves... So even a homeless white guy is an animal to you? Money makes a human eh brief? You fucking scum bag. Ok, bore me with some details...in the land of opportunity a white man that doesn't have a pot to piss in and claims to be drug free is homeless? you're a real Asshole. hopefully one day you'll be in the same boat, minus empathetic people offering to bring you food and water. |

I can only imagine what what happen if a person lost all their ID, in like a tornado or hurricane, and had nothing. Three years ago I accidentally threw away all the records needed to get my passport. It cost a boat load of money to get them all replaced. I understand what you're going through. |

Been there, done that, though fortunately I had my car paid off to live out of and it was only a month or so. Thanks. Right now I have what I need. Food, shelter, and money sometime the beginning of next month. Before I go out looking for any type of employment, I first need to finish up with the hassle of getting other things in my life in order here. Being able to meet this state's needs for having a drivers license is the first of those, and that has proven a a major headache in itself. |

He is one of many. There was a guy in our town who had all his possessions in his car. He would bring his desktop into McDonald's and use the wi-fi looking for work. He landed two jobs worked hard and seems to have left the area. We all need to remember kindness. I had an incident this winter that still saddens me. A man was holding a sign outside of shopping center that told of how he had been asking for money to buy a pair of socks for hours and no one helped. I tried to give him cash and a juice bottle but he was angry. He was angry and ashamed at society, plus angry and ashamed that he thought people would help. I an glad that the OP has new opportunities. I wish you the best of luck. |

Hoping to find a way around the beurocratic nightmare so I don't have to spend $45 bucks (which i don't yet have) and wait 8-12 weeks for the turnaround of a birth certificatte. In the day and age, I can't understand why the NY DMV cant (electronically) verifiy my DOB somehow. It's unreal. Keeping it in an IRA just makes it easier for the bank to take it from you in the event of a collapse. And then you have no money. Try this site, OP. [link to www.vitalchek.com (secure)] I have used them before, and from what I remember I didn't have to have any 'letters'. Proof of ID was all that was needed. The probem is I have no credit card. And you have to have a credit card whose billing address and name MATCHES the record of the individual being requested. So no credit card, no vitalchek. I had looked at their website already. So you can go to any Ace Cash Express and get a 'net spend' card. Will work like a credit or debit card, and anice bonus is that it also functions as a checking account with a routing number /account number so that you could use it for direct deposit if/when you sign up for payroll at a place of employment. There is no ACE in New York State. |
