About a year ago lost my job of twelve years, couldn't find new work, made some bad financial choices, and today I sit in the public library on my old laptop typing away as all my posessions lay in three small suitcases very close to where I am sitting.

I think this might possibly be the worst place to be homless, given the horrible heat.

So I have seventy-five cents to my name, am not sure where I'll be putting my head down to sleep tonight, and was wondering if anyone else out there has been in a similar prediciment.

I'll update my story here as I can. Maybe a few people will find it interesting.

Hope things work out with your ID. It used to be that you could get a birth certificate on anyone. People did it often. Think they're trying to drive people over the brink. Hang in there.

In some states battered women shelters are full of illegals and they cannot kick them out because they cannot legally get jobs. So once the cops bring them to a shelter -- they can stay there forever with their kids. Free babysitting, free food....



People who have never been jobless, homeless, etc. really think that there is a lot more available to people than there actually is. Most people believe that there is some kind of "safety net" -- and sometimes there is not.

I do not think they can turn you down immediately... I believe they HAVE to give you benefits for 30-90 days, then they can deny you.

I had already looked into food stamps. I was told I did not qualify. I guess because I am not a pregnant female, a female at all, or a female with kids.

To me, the only way you are disqualified is if you have too much money. If you do not, then you qualify for food stamps.

You can ALWAYS get food stamps, unless your income or your assets are too great. The ONLY exception is certain counties in South Carolina, where you have to take a government job if it is offered to you, in addition to or in lieu of food stamps. But that is actually a good thing, isn't it? The counties include Greenville, Richland and Charleston.

As I understand it, you say you are not eligible for food stamps because you are getting unemployment compensation. Is that right?

My next question would be: then why are you homeless if you are getting unemployment compensation? I don't get it. If you can't afford rent in Dallas, get out of there and go to some rural county and get you a trailer.

You can apply for emergency food stamps if you are homeless and without funds, and get the SNAP card within a week.
