Re: Homeless in Dallas Texas
OP, look into a finding a job at a call center. I just got one when times became tough and it's helped a lot simply because its something. The job is shit, to be honest. However, certain people can make you smile and at the end of the day, you're getting money. Most of them hire almost all the time and you don't need loads of experience, which is good for those who lack but are in need of it. It'll be something to hold you over until you can find something better.

I spent 15 Years working in a call center and that is an environment I will NEVER go back to.

I'm glad it's so hard for you to get a new license OP. Just think how easy it would be for a terrorist to get away with getting proper ID if they didn't have all these hassles in place. You should be grateful.

Also you don't need a license to live. There is such a thing as working under the table for cash, and finding a landlord who doesn't require a background check and other things.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 41716799

I need a license if I want to purchase a car, register that car, get insurance and drive in this state. I need that ID to open a savings/checking account. And I understand that ther should be some things to make it difficult to get an ID...BUT I have been driving for 25 years, I have a SS card and #. SURELY in this day and age this can be proven without forcing a person in distress to jump through hoops.
 Quoting: homelessguy92

Am I reading this right? Does one really need a NY drivers license to drive in NY even if one holds a valid license from another state? Does this apply to every state in the U.S., that one state license is not recognised or legal in another state ???

According to the ny state dmv, you're supposed to get a ny license within 30 days of residency. I'll certainly need one if i want to purchase, REGISTER AND INSURE a care in new york state.

Good luck,OP. Everybody makes mistakes. No one is perfect. Some think they are, but they aren't.

Assuming you're a guy, there's not much help from public or private agencies for adult men. Most are aimed at women and women with children. But there are many programs aimed at alcoholics and drug addicts, and the government money must be used specifically for these two issues, so you might just lie and tell a social worker or whoever that you're an alcoholic and/or drug addict [assuming you aren't] and that will grease the wheels so-to-speak. People who're diagnoses as mentally ill [including things like depression], alcoholic or drug addict are even entitled to subsidized housing, in addition to things like SSI, whereas 'regular' homeless guys aren't.

It's unfortunately a game and guys like you have to play it. Good luck.

I love all of the vitriol on this thread (sarcasm). I've had major struggles too since last year...MAJOR. Apparently it isn't okay to have troubles and end up homeless, but it is okay to berate someone who's lost everything and is being as humble as one can be about it...

I don't think I've ever shaken my head in disgust as much as I am this morning.

I guess I take it more personally because, while I've been struggling and dwindling, I have all of these family members who are church-going, buttoned-up types that care more about upgrading their iPods than even bothering to ask if I'm okay or not. I don't even want anything from them - I'm fine on my own - but contact would be nice. Being rejected by people who you used to fellowship with is tough to swallow...

Re: Homeless in Dallas Texas
So as of today I am officially homeless.

I won't bore you all with long sob stories.

About a year ago lost my job of twelve years, couldn't find new work, made some bad financial choices, and today I sit in the public library on my old laptop typing away as all my posessions lay in three small suitcases very close to where I am sitting.

I think this might possibly be the worst place to be homless, given the horrible heat.

So I have seventy-five cents to my name, am not sure where I'll be putting my head down to sleep tonight, and was wondering if anyone else out there has been in a similar prediciment.

I'll update my story here as I can. Maybe a few people will find it interesting.

You know. When i made the initial post here I guess about a month ago now, I had literally hit rock bottom. I made a lot of bad decissions (most my own fault) that left me peniless, homeless, and I had burned bridges with many of my family and friends who had tried to help me but I effed that up, too. I have NEVER been a religious person in my life, but at t around that moment, as I sat and made my post wondering what the heck was going to happen, I did pray to a higher power. And somehow, I pushed all my self pity and loathing aside, and good things started to happen. Some great ideas came from this very forum, and I also believe that some guideance came from "above" I see this as my second change, and I plan to use it to the ability to not only better myself, reinvent myself, but ultimately make restituion to people I have wronged in my life.

Michael,

Thank you for this thread. I enjoyed reading it, what an adventure you have had.

I believe the positive response to your plight came from your opening your heart and soul and taking responsibility for your plight. Your honesty and need touched hearts as we all are only a few steps from the same plight.

An accident, poor health, the economy,...we all are vulnerable to something and a helping hand blesses the giver as well.

Hope you are feeling better and are able to make all your dreams come true.

Try to make good on your old debts to family, guilt is a weight we are better off without.

Best of luck to you!

Just read your blog, a good first step. I believe you should keep it up as a form of self reflection and knowledge and therapy. We tend to see what we believe, and often we believe things that just are not true.

Relationships can be repaired, when you know where you went wrong, when you make amends and ask forgiveness.

I'm truly sorry you lost your job. I believe it is an opportunity to start a better more mindful life, thank God it didn't happen when your were much older.

One of the biggest employers here now tests for cigarette smoking and you can lose your benefits and your job for smoking cigarettes, being overweight, or not exercising! The world is changing fast, being self employed is the best bet for long term freedom and job security as we all age.

Stay mindful, hopeful and joyous, and blessings will come to you and those you interact with.

Op I wish you would of had a real story of homelessness. Being homeless for a few days is like taking a field trip. I was once on the street for a month when I was 18, met so many interesting squatters and homeless drug addicts. Best time of my life. Most homeless people eventually find like minds to travel in packs with. It's really not so bad being homeless unless you're really young or old and can't fend for yourself.

Thank you for your kind and uplifting words; they mean a lot. And yes I completely take responsiblity for the bad things I've done in my life. I can't undo them. I don't know if I was meant to be where I am right now. I do know that I see this as a second chace, one I will not squander. Once I get myself established here a bit more, and once I can overcome the beouracacy, red tape, and minor financial burden of trying to get a copy of my birth certificate I'll be a lot happier. It's amazing the things we take for granted in life.

You get yourself out of one predicament with being homeless with help and now that you are facing more struggles with the financial system you need to keep your mind and heart free from stress and have faith.

I know because I also have been let down by burdens I thought were out of my control with the system and people but sometimes it pays to be thankful for what you have now and not to worry too much about the future.

Blessing and hope your life works out as you dream on!

Goes to show that despite what the born-agains think our Creator/God/the Divine is there for every single one of us. All we need to do is have hope & take the first step :)

OP, just out of curiosity, what are you doing for a living now? (I've followed the thread from the start but don't see what kind of work you're doing).

A lot of jobs are available in Calgary, Ab Canada. Booming economy here, bad part is it is hard to find rentals, but easier if you can stand renting out a room or basement suite.
