How long does it take a flare to reach us. I know the light takes 8 minutes but does it take a flare longer?

You people worry to much, just a run of the mill sun enema. Bend over and take like good little children!!!!!

Was planning on cutting grass today, takes a couple of hours, should a person not be outside in this situation or does having a roof over your head even make a difference at all?

Yes.
And the sun is rotating an extremely active region toward us, so a couple of these events that end up cascading at Earth could find the magnetosphere down and the grid VERY vulnerable.

I know there are a lot of other pics, but this - this is just plain - well, a bit unnerving. The ENTIRE right hand side of the sun (in this pic) is ablaze, and I have never seen anything like it.

And I do consider myself a bit of a suntard, having been monitoring the sun via all the internet sites for as long as they have been around - since probably 1997 or so.

This is significant. Will it cause a global event of any kind? Maybe so, maybe not. But to those who say "This is normal, happens all the time" I call BS!

Alert cancelled. There was a very large flare and the readings were offline. For all I knew it was a large X flare.

Sine then the metric updated to show M5.0 -- still an enormous eruption, but nothing of concern in terms of our safety.

The whole south of Vietnam power grid went down and stayed down for 8 hours. It was around 10:00 AM local time (or pretty close)when the power was lost in some 22 provinces spanning a very large area. The official story was a construction vehicle disturbed a 500Kv line somewhere north of HCMC in Binh Duong Province at around 2:00 pm but then I am sure we lost power around 10:00 AM along with the whole southern part of the country...definitely an unprecedented event!
