Are they Cajun? Some of those have a very heavy accent but sometimes they are actually speaking their form of French.

I have cousins who are Cajuns and once in a while I can't understand them as well but usually can.

Unlike that ski instructor in Colorado who had apparently never encountered Cajuns before.
