Going back to your original motherboard NIC - although you've already installed another NIC and it works now - is it connected directly to your router through a cable? If so, have you tried cleaning the network jacks on the router and the motherboard? You can actually see the, I think, nine strips of metal if it's gunked up or not. Nothing a cotton bud tip and some WD-40 can't cure.
