$40 for a Case of Bottled Water? 'Preying' on Oklahoma Tornado Victims
Investigators with the Oklahoma Attorney General's office have already uncovered evidence of businesses taking advantage of the recent tornado's devastation by price-gouging in the weather-ravaged region, including a grocery store accused of charging consumers $40 for a case of water.

Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt told ABC News that 30 investigators from his office started aggressively combing the region for fraud just hours after the tornado tore through it – and immediately found businesses violating the law.

"This is something we were putting in place and starting in motion as soon as we knew the threat existed," Pruitt said. "We're going to places where we think potential harm could occur."

Using a law known as the Emergency Price Stabilization Act, consumer protection investigators are teaming with local law enforcement to catch fraud as it happens. The law was passed after a tornado leveled the same region in 1999 and prohibits price increases of more than 10 percent on goods and services such as water and hotel rooms for 30 days after a disaster. It extends to 180 days for construction-related complaints!

This is not a "simple" supply and demand situation guy. This is an extraordinary situation that should actually shove businesses towards the helping side of things; you know, instead of price-gouging. You penny pinching asshole.

Goodbye, halcyon days...

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.

There is another theory mentioned, which states that this has already happened.

That's a fuck of a lot cheaper than at the Denver airport. Thos anti goughing laws only extend people's suffering. By voiding out a free market, supplies, water, fuel, medicine etc...will not be relocated there as quickly and distributors have no moticve to service an area which has no power, blocked roads, lotters, disease, desperate people, dangerous people without their meds, etc...

They will be like the peeps brought to the NO Superdome after Katrina. Out of the fire into the frying pan.

Unions will also be shooing away people volunteering to restore power, roads, lights, etc...

Add to that. FEMA, martial law, road blocks, gov't photo ops, Obama going there making false promises, bureacrats stealing funds, new pork legislation, and have a very merry sweltering hot summer.

I'm originally from Oklahoma City, and from what I can tell from what my friends are saying, aside from this report, things are going amazingly over there considering the circumstances. Restaurants are giving out free food, hotels are giving free rooms, people are barbecuing food for victims and volunteers to eat, and volunteers are lining up to help out in any way they can. That is something that you do not see in America very often and it kind of reminds me of how the Japanese acted after 3/11 when it came to recovery.
According to my sister, who lives in SW OKC, the water pressure is extremely low, almost nothing coming out, at her apartment complex and at a lot of other peoples houses, even at her work, a daycare, so they had to shut down for the time being because of no/low running water.

All true...

If he split the case up a d sold them individually, he could have gotten at least his $40, helped more people and not seemed like a schmuck...

So if for nothing else other than being a stupid entrepreneur, he should get out of business...

Yes, I am from Shawnee originally. Seeing and hearing the same. Overwhelming response from local businesses, individuals and corporations. There are urgent requests for people to come and help unload semis full of supplies. There is also a tremendous response to missing and injured pets including free vet care livestock and small pet boarding. The need is great but the response has been as well. The line of volunteers in Moore yesterday was said to be a mile long. As an aside the Westboro Baptist freaks are in Norman at the OU campus where some victims are staying in the dorms. Apparently they are planning to share their brand of hatred at the children's funerals which begin Friday. There is a massive movement afoot to shield the families. Finally, a group of funeral homes will be offering complete funeral and internment services at no charge. No squealing for FEMA. These are good people doing the right thing. Okies give me hope for humanity.

About a week after hurricane Andrew two men brought in a full tractor trailer loan of one gallon water bottles for sale for $6 each. The crowd quickly knocked them aside and the trailer was quickly emptied.

One thing they do in south Florida before the threat of a storm is they will locked the regular unleaded pump handles so all you can buy is premuim.
