They are going to close my town
There are only 12 households left. This is a rural mountain village. Most of the peole here are very old. In fact, I'm the youngest left here. Its kind of sad but inevitable. They are consolidating these small communities to bigger places. You can stay if you want but there will be no more electricity, water, road care, etc. People get a little money to move, so I accepted.

Slowly the plants will be reclaim the site. It will be covered in green slowly, an abandoned and forgotten town. Most of the buildings are made poorly and will collapse in a few years. It is a sad and beautiful thing to think about.

Heh. No, not really close.

I worry about it sometimes.

I think its just too expensive to provide electicity and other services to these tiny towns so there is a movement to close them down. There are many such places, this is happening all over Japan.

Curious..details please ;)

I'm up in the mountains near Nagano Prefecture. I don't think the closing is Fukushima related. Its more about the economy collapsing. There is no work here and everyone is old. No taxing to pay for things, big government debt, etc.

See above, its economic.

I think they started doing such kind of movements in Hokkaido (north island) some years ago, I don't know.

I guess I could stay -- you are not forced out -- but its virtual forcing when they turn off water, electricity, street service, etc.

I agree with Abi here - it might be worth staying "off the grid" - of course you'd need to be close to a place to get supplies and things - but that might not be a bad thing!

I don't get it. ?Why leave or "shut down a town"? You are simply off the grid like a lot of people. Get some solar power and a water tank if you like the place.

You would have to really know how to do it. No electricity, water...think about it. How about roads? Buildings are thin walls, they collapse easy. There are vines and plants that quickly cover everything (you have "Kudzu" in the south, its the same kind of thing)....everything gets rotten cause its wet. You might be able to hunt and fish like the ancients but I doubt it, I think the eclogy is ruined.

wow! such an interesting and insightful post OP

but it does make sense and it's amazing to look at Tokyo and see how big it is. such an interesting culture. Japan feels very similar to the western world, in some ways... but not many. It draws a lot of attention from people who I meet and talk with because we all(ages 20-29) grew up with japanese video games like pokemon and yugioh

unrelated but check out this interactive map of Tokyo you can zoom in and even see the people clearly

[link to tokyogigapixel.360cities.net]

I'm practicing my kana and I hope to learn all the important Japanese grammar soon. Then I will be able to read and speak properly and hopefully take a trip to the country one day

The Japanese have the lowest birth rate in the world.

The population is old, this will continue to happen.
