There are many such places, this is happening all over Japan.

For what reason, and for how long?

The Japanese have the lowest birth rate in the world.

The population is old, this will continue to happen.

yep, too many women focused on empty jobs, living the hello kitty dream, and never having a family.

As a broad generalization, japanese women are so immature they make americans look stoic and grounded.

wow! such an interesting and insightful post OP

but it does make sense and it's amazing to look at Tokyo and see how big it is. such an interesting culture. Japan feels very similar to the western world, in some ways... but not many. It draws a lot of attention from people who I meet and talk with because we all(ages 20-29) grew up with japanese video games like pokemon and yugioh

unrelated but check out this interactive map of Tokyo you can zoom in and even see the people clearly

I'm practicing my kana and I hope to learn all the important Japanese grammar soon. Then I will be able to read and speak properly and hopefully take a trip to the country one day

Very nice thank you!

You can come over any time. Most younger people in the cities speak at least some English so no problem for you to get along with English.

Well I'M getting tired of typing, this is the last post for now. Thanks for talking people.

Heh. No, not really close.

I worry about it sometimes.

I think its just too expensive to provide electicity and other services to these tiny towns so there is a movement to close them down. There are many such places, this is happening all over Japan.

There are only 12 households left. This is a rural mountain village. Most of the peole here are very old. In fact, I'm the youngest left here. Its kind of sad but inevitable. They are consolidating these small communities to bigger places. You can stay if you want but there will be no more electricity, water, road care, etc. People get a little money to move, so I accepted.

Slowly the plants will be reclaim the site. It will be covered in green slowly, an abandoned and forgotten town. Most of the buildings are made poorly and will collapse in a few years. It is a sad and beautiful thing to think about.

That is a shame. Rural Japan is so beautiful. I know the economy is very bad there now. That is not the fault of the people but the corrupt politicians.
I hope you will find a suitable place to call home and that Japan will see happier days ahead.

Closed is best case. You see you can stay and not be forced out. Not really a closing.

Now if they TAKE your land, bulldoze it down, rebuild on top, that is a sad sight.

I feel for you OP. As others have said, it is happening in lots of places and will soon be implemented everywhere.

Just wait till the privatize everything and then the corporations decide your rural community is too expensive to send electricity to...maintain pipe and sewrlines...even ship food to. You will be given a dime and a song and quietly escorted to your "new" home...a tiny box in a fenced in community where they monitor everyone who enters and exits...

Just wait...

This evoked wistful thoughts for me-
a once bustling village not far from me was eventually abandoned by the last of the inhabitants. Now, 50 years later, you would never know there was ever a settlement there, save for the remnants of two stone ovens, and the written history...nature has totally recovered what was once hers- virtually erased all signs of human habitation...
It is as you say, both sad- yet beautiful.

Write about it OP- a tribute to those who walked it, worked it, spent their lives there...and to it's return to nature. One day someone will read of it.
