Islamic Sharia law unable to adapt to modernity?
Recent polls have shown that a majority of the world's muslims want Sharia law to play an important role in their governments. [link to www.pewforum.org]

They are taught that Muslims today have strayed away so far from Islamic teachings that God is punishing them by depriving them from what the West has accomplished.

Islamic history in the Muslim world has inadvertently switched the focus from how one can be a practising Muslim who contributes to the greater good of society, to focusing on attempts to replicate the exact way past Muslims supposedly lived. Hence, many Muslims today are working hard to bring about quantum mechanical speculations to reality and take everyone back in time away from "evil" modernity.

Through a reliance on Sharia precepts and patterning the lives of glorious muslims from the distant past, Islam has become a "Boy Scout religion" where one simply opens up the book of rules and implements them. Moreover, such a presentation of Islam has made it seem to be unable to address modernity. Excerpts from article "To Sharia or not to Sharia The Question of Islamopoliticis" [link to www.aljazeera.com]

To more readily adapt to modern life, I believe muslims must reject the over simplistic recipe of following sharia word for word and work toward the greater good of society.

Re: Islamic Sharia law unable to adapt to modernity?
As Nesrine Malik pointed out last year in response to another oppressive act of the Sudanese government in the name of Sharia, Islamic rhetoric in politics was initially "a way of paying lip service to religion for the government to gain legitimacy". She mentioned how this false cloak of religiosity now serves as a "potent tool that allows the government to apply punishment harshly (but inconsistently) whenever it feels the need... to invoke the emotive power of religious offence".

Re: Islamic Sharia law unable to adapt to modernity?
if they think they are deprived of what the west has accomplished, they should also know the west rejected religious laws centuries ago.

christians lawfully burnt early scientists alive, if they were lucky like gallileo, they were put under permanent house arrest and their work was banned.

women,(and some men) literally by the millions, were lawfully weighed against their bible, and burnt at the stake as witches, to such extremes that villages and towns thoughout europe were left with a massive shortage of females, some entire regions left with only a few or none at all.

the rise of democracy was fiercely opposed by christian powers for centuries, democratic and religious laws just don't mix .

in the long run, islamic people will have to choose between the two. sharia law is far more moderate than the religious laws the west rejected, so it has continued further into the modern world.

shariah, like earlier christian laws, is particularly oppressive of women. islamic women are not even allowed to speak about it, so any polls conducted are answered only by men.

Let's hope there is a faster way to reach modernity than what was experienced by the west. The Muslims can learn from that example hopefully.
