Well, I've never stopped to deeply analyse why they have lights - but there has been some great answers to Devils Advocate. I've enjoyed this discussion.

You can't be serious. That might be the dumbest logic that I have heard in...forever. The Devil needs a new "advocate."

Or it is just a sideefect of what ever technology is used, yeah, we might overanalyse the exhaust pipe of a flying object. Just because there is light somewhere, does not mean that who or whatever producing it needs it in order to see propperly or want to be seen.

The lights are not lights, they are effects of the propulsion system.

You're assuming they need them to see what they're doing, which may not be the case. You're also assuming they're just lights, which may also not be the case.
Light can simply be a bi-product of energy production. Light can also be used to warn others of your presence.
Many possible explanations.

How far back do my sighting go, well before youtube, try 1956 when as a teen I watched a shiny disc fly from the south to the north at great speed, well past any planes speed that were flying then, it was high, but still big. Then in 58 a low flying one went over the farm, this at night as the other was mid day.

I am a pilot and I watched one hovering off our pattern in N. MI. while landing at night. I wached another streak across the sky when helping a fellow sailor back in the 80's in northern Lake Huron, it took an abrupt right turn, then another straight up and into space, I sipped my beer and grinned.

We wached two huge glowing objects in the 90's while anchored mid fl on the coloosahatchee, they were to big they were witnessed from both coasts. If you want a video of this, you will find it on the old show, "hard copy". While anchored off key largo, we wached one at 3 am go over at 1200 ft. and it was the size of a triangular battleship, very stealth.

Three years ago, my wife and friend wached in daylight a giant cylinder way above the airlines fly over Punta Gorda. Then the next year she pointed out two more, they were way high. It took me five minutes to locate my binoculars, and they were still there, while incoming and leaving airlines came and went. They were the real deal as I observed them for a long time and no, I don't have the proper equipment for taking pictures.

I skipped many sighting but this last year as I was in traffic in Port Charlotte on my motor cycle, I noticed a blinking light, this in the after noon. It kept blinking and I thought it might be the sun off an airplane canopy, but it was also going up and down. To avoid becoming road kill as there are a lot of old drivers down here, I pulled off into fan city store and analyzed what I saw. The light was a light, in one second intervals. The craft was diving down, stop and then bouncing up several thousand feet at an angle while zig zagging it's way out into the gulf, slowly getting further away from me. I know airplanes and nothing I know of can do this, let along surviving the abrupt stops and starts. I asked a RV nighbor if models can do this and he told me no, anyhow it lasted too long and went way into the gulf, plus the intensity of the light, it just went on out of sight.

I don't bother posting my sightings due to moronic replies, but I must say, this site is not as bad as another I visit. Last oct, I almost had a sighting but it was raining too hard. I heard this whirling electronic erriee sound over a cabin in an isolated valley. The sound hovered over the cabin in the middle of the night for a length of time, heavy rain and cold as hell, I stayed in bed. We have no electricity there and as I say, it i in the middle of nowhere. Anyhow, I suddenly did not remember anymore of that experience.
