Large quantity of metal studded belts held in the USA due to them being radioactive WTF!
ASOS, the online clothing retailer, has withdrawn from sale a batch of belts that were found to be radioactive.

The metal-studded peplum leather belts could cause injury to the wearer if worn for over 500 hours, according to an internal report by the retailer.

It is understood the radioactive reading on the items was recorded in routine product testing, sparking a global recall.

Paperwork on the belts linked them to Haq International, an Indian group, but there is some uncertainty over whether they were indeed the supplier

The report, called Project Purple Flower, said: “Unfortunately this incident is quite a common occurrence. India and the Far East are large consumers of scrap metal for their home and foreign markets.

Is it!! First I've heard of it! "quite a common occurrence" so how much of this material is in goods we use on a daily basis how much has not been detected!

Does anyone know if everything that comes through ports worldwide is tested? Or would this have been a random test?

Wasn't all the metal at the World Trade Center shipped to China. If I were a betting man, I would put money on those belts coming from China

Radioactive scrap DOOM:

[link to www.recyclingtoday.com]

Recent events have necessitated the steel mills’ tough stance. From 1983 through 1997, there were 49 confirmed meltings of radioactive sources worldwide, with the vast majority occurring in the U.S., according to a paper by Joel E. Lubenau and James G. Yusko in the March 1998 issue of Health Physics.

Andrew G. Sharkey, III, president and CEO of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) in testimony before the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), testified that from 1983 through June 1996 there were almost 1,900 discoveries of radioactivity in scrap. Sharkey noted that at steel mini-mills the cost of decontamination, disposal and shutdown losses reached $23 million in a single incident and average in the range of $8 to $10 million. Sharkey testified that the cost of a radioactive melt at a large integrated steel mill is estimated to run as high as $100 million or more

Maybe THIS is why we GAVE 10 BILLION DOLLARS to the Indian school system to teach them to read, write and speak English mo' better. Easier for them to say "sarry Charlie" when you call them for tech support or ask why they're sending radiation around the world.

Funny how W gave them the (sic) 10 BILLION, and then a couple of years later his buddy Mitt R made millions by helping corporations here lay people off and then sending their jobs over there (after they were taught to communicate better in English), and then Mr. R. hid the cash he made from "helping" these corporations off shore.

Then THAT might tie in with Monsanto changing India from a agricultural country to a service tech economy in the cities. The out of work ag laborers were forced into the urban areas to find work (you gotta eat) and find jobs for pennies on the dollar compared to what the (God bless) "American" corporations paid people here. They have our jobs and STILL live in poverty.

Hey, this IS a conspiracy site, right?...

One local scrap yard (major name) has radiation detectors at the scale. Another one, even closer (independant) doesn't so who knows how much radioactive scrap is getting through........

They wear belts near their loins the longer they keep it there the more likely it is to make them sterile. This reminded me of something I heard about once. There was this elitist commune in London that was planning to use radioactive material to sterilize slow kids during their 11 + exams.

If you wore 10 of these belts 24 hours a day for the rest of your life, you 'Might' get enough radiation to lose a couple hairs off your tallywhacker.

Lol, its really not a big deal.

Fun fact,
If you go to any antique shop with a giger counter you can find many irradiated items such as lamps, ash trays, pottery.

The scrap yards weren't as strict back in the 50's so a lot of junk got mixed in with manufacturing material.

I think it's pretty interesting
Nothing to really worry about, and definitely not as scary as how bad Fukushima is going to kick our a$$. That my friends, is something to worry about.

Good question. We have 120+ nuclear power plants, we know about, in the US.
Well beyond enough in Meltdowns to kill our planet 10 times.

Yet it only makes up for 15% of our used energy?

Brilliant!

Everyone who reads this post. Please send a letter to your states congressman, or if not in the U.S. whoever you can and tell them to SHUT IT DOWN! It may seem insignificant, but it is each and everyone of you who make a diffrence.

J/k. No I don't.
You are right, it's not funny and honestly the only safe amount of radiation is zero radiation.

Cobalt-60 is nasty , but
The magnitude of the health risk depends on the quantity of cobalt-60 involved and on exposure conditions.

I personally didn't test the belts but I'd be safe guessing they were very-very-low readings.

I just watched a history channel special on this very subject and like I said. It happens often. Little nuclear waste slips through the cracks at the scrap yard.

Fact is, there are Definitely bigger health hazards out there you are exposed to than this.
