Unfortunately, that assumption is dead wrong. In recent years, the once mammoth technological gap between the U.S. military and the Chinese military has been closing at a frightening pace. China has been accomplishing this by brazenly stealing our technology and hacking into our computer systems. The Pentagon and the Obama administration know all about this, but they don’t do anything about it. Perhaps the fact that China owns about a trillion dollars of our national debt has something to do with that. In any event, today China has the largest military in the world and the second largest military budget in the world. They have stolen plans for our most advanced jets, helicopters, ships and missile systems. The Washington Post is reporting on a confidential report that was prepared for the Pentagon, and what this report says about the extent of Chinese cyber espionage is absolutely startling. Anonymous Coward User ID: 12016936 Canada 05/28/2013 10:29 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Nortel Collapse Linked To Chinese Hackers Corporate espionage continues against Canadian firms, security expert says. CBC News -------------------- A former systems security adviser to Nortel Networks says he has no doubt that extensive cyberattacks on the technology company contributed to its downfall. In an interview with the CBC’s As It Happens, Brian Shields, the former senior systems security adviser at Nortel, said spying by hackers allegedly based in China “absolutely” was a “considerable factor.” “When they see what your business plans are, that's a huge advantage. It's unfair business practices that really bring down a company of this size," Shields said. Nortel is currently selling off assets in the wake of a 2009 bankruptcy filing. He insisted the hackers were based in China, something the Chinese government has rejected. Shields has alleged that Chinese hackers had unfettered access to the former telecommunications giant as far back as 2000, downloaded business plans, research and development reports, employee emails and other documents. He maintains that Canadian companies — including Waterloo, Ont.-based Research in Motion — continue to be targets. "Absolutely. Without a doubt. The questions you've got to ask is, is there something of value? Companies, for example, like RIM [are] a huge target. They ought to worry about this stuff. And anybody else that is in technology or oil exploration. This is economic espionage. It truly is.” Corporate espionage is a growing problem for North American companies, with the majority of attacks coming from China. Last November, a group of U.S. analysts said there were as many as 12 different Chinese groups participating in cyberattacks on U.S. companies and government agencies. During BHP Billiton’s hostile takeover bid for Saskatchewan’s PotashCorp, hackers traced to China targeted Bay Street law firms and other companies to get insider information on the $38-billion corporate takeover. Those same hackers also targeted Canadian government computers in fall 2010, targeting the Finance Department, the Treasury Board, and Defence Research and Development Canada, a civilian agency of the Department of National Defence. "It's very personal to me because I'm very sad-hearted about what happened to so many of my friends, to this once great Canadian company,” Shields told As it Happens. [link to www.cbc.ca] |

Yes China has nuclear weapons but so do we and theirs aren't even as advanced or numerous as the Russians and our interceptors would actually be able to dent a full scale attack pretty handily. As for economically, the Chinese need us far more than we need them. If FIAT currencies go down, China and Japan will be left holding a bag of worthless paper, as much manufacturing as the U.S. has lost we still have the ability to produce most of the basic essentials in house especially food, unfortunately the same cannot be said of China, I've had this argument with many people in the financial field and they all agree China has more to lose than we do. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 12016936 Canada 05/28/2013 11:01 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Suspected Chinese Spy Loses Bid To Rejoin Civil Service National Post A former senior analyst to the Prime Minister and Cabinet, who was fired when Canada’s spy agency questioned her “loyalty to Canada” over suspicion she was spying for China, has lost her fight to return to the civil service. Haiyan Zhang, who worked as a senior communications analyst with the Privy Council Office in Ottawa, was suspected of having engaged in intelligence gathering during previous employment with Xinhua, China’s state-run news agency, and retained contact with spies working in China, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service reported to the government in 2003 when recommending her “Top Secret” security clearance be denied. Richard Fadden, the director of CSIS, publicly warned last year that some politicians were falling under the influence of foreign governments through personal relationships. He also said China was the most aggressive in pursuing unofficial allies, although it caused an outcry and he later backtracked on the seriousness of his allegations. Ms. Zhang is a native of Lanzhou, China, who became a Canadian citizen in 1999, four years after moving to Ottawa. She joined the government’s civil service in 2002 and obtained a “Secret” security clearance while working in a senior position at Industry Canada. The following year she was recruited by the PCO. When the PCO sought to upgrade her security clearance to “Top Secret,” which would allow her access to more sensitive material, a CSIS investigation found “reasonable grounds to believe” she had been a spy when she worked with Xinhua, court heard. CSIS further said Ms. Zhang maintained contacts with people still engaged in spying in China and, according to court documents, “questioned Ms. Zhang’s loyalty to Canada and recommended that the Clerk of the Privy Council deny Ms. Zhang the Top Secret clearance.” [link to news.nationalpost.com] |
