Do the internet and video-games, etc. kill empathy? | |
Gus User ID: 27571086 United States 05/31/2013 05:25 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Regarding video games. If it is violent then the subconscious is being programmed to reflect such beliefs. I now find video games boring after being once of those kids addicted to them for years. Now a game can barely keep me interested for more than 15 minutes. Why play video games when one can astral project. Peace |

Everyday i think of all the helpless people in the world. So how can videogames kill empathy. Imho it is total bullshit. Sure i loose Empathy for bankers and the people who are behind the scenes.May they ROT in hell.;) |

I grew up regularly seeing starving, bloated bellied, skinny armed, snotty nosed kids in poverty and as a child I became desensitised to it. I grew up having it drummed into me that its normal. |

Kids who have never gutted a fish or built a model airplane by hand, or played with a real doll house. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1130777 Showing my age I guess, but the Internets is a cold heartless place. Does it make a cold heartless generation? the internet is just another extension and evolution of human interaction, if you are an asshole on the inside you will be a bigger asshole online. The consumption of processed and genetically modified foods is what makes people stupid and apathetic. apparently you haven't read many articles or books. This all comes down to how the brain is wired, especially during the formative years. I know many on here want to blame autism on vaccines, and all the other maladies such as ADD etc., but is it a coincidence these have multiplied exponentially with the advent of video gaming? It's a question that needs to be asked and some researchers are doing that right now. Video game addiction is a real problem and young people are failing in high school and college because of it. They also become more isolated and can only relate to the invisible "players" on they play with. I know, my nephew is one of those people. He will never, ever be normal. He is like Lenny from Of Mice and Men. The only thing he can function at is video games. His mother used to say, as most gamers parents say, "I think he will grow up to design his own video games!" Oh joy! Now he's 20, eating pizza and sitting at home all day playing video games. Last time I saw him he couldn't speak louder than a whisper, and never completed one sentence. that's just your fucked up genetics |

Does it kill empathy? No, I don't think so, IMHO, but it might affect who receives empathy. As for video games, I think it largely depends on the person and why they are playing a game. Entertainment? Distraction? Curiosity? Imagination and fantasy? Expression of suppressed anger? Social interaction? Video games will temporarily feed a need possibly for any of those things, but they can never be a true substitute for complete communication, IMO, just like the internet. Whenever you're on the internet, or playing a video-game, no matter how much personal freedom one seems to have, you are still working within another person's created incomplete paradigm. There is emotional expressive freedom only as it exists within a framework. Just my thoughts. |

I use it all the time and as a musician wrote a song entitled empathy. Video games are fantasy & you should know the difference between reality & fantasy. If you don't you need to grow up. Been gaming since Atari. You can't generalize people based on something they do. its ignorant. |

That is just one way my empathy is completely unchallenged every day of my life. Anyone who posits that they know who they are obviously isn't investigating with all the information ;-) ^^^ Psychopaths often emulate the emotional behavior of the people arround them in order to "blend in". Under the facade though, beats the heart of an emotionless killing machine. Under that mask of friendliness lies an ice cold killer. It's apparent by his postign history. Sick freak. At least somebody here understood the point I was making. The point being that the vast majority of people in the world today have psychopathic tendencies. It has been programed into their psyches from birth. Getting them to acknowledge what they are is nearly impossible. They cloak themselves in good deeds in order to hide what they really are. Our civilization is built on psychopathy. This is the primary reason why our civilization is doomed. My apologies to the person I trolled making that point. Although most here missed it completely. |

No hard feelings, in fact I agree it is valid to say that most insane people don't know they are insane. Although I do like to assume people are sane before I get to know them, not the other way around. |
