Do the internet and video-games, etc. kill empathy?
I worry about kids who have only grown up knowing this electronic world. Kids who have never gutted a fish or built a model airplane by hand, or played with a real doll house.

Showing my age I guess, but the Internets is a cold heartless place. Does it make a cold heartless generation?

My experience is no. I have been playing video games for 22 years it hasn't affected my empathy. It has however fine-tuned my reflexes.

there is no doubt some impressions might leave a change in the subconscious, and this poses even deeper questions, like what impressions effect who. ability to control the masses by using these impressions.

When a human being is no longer seen as a human being,
there is your resulting lack of conscious and empathy.

does empathy even exist in a technological world? only when an individual removes themselves from technological trappings do they understand what it is to feel another individual

i think there making many war video games right now for the pure fact that , the military services need people, and people playing the games will go oh " i want to do that " and so they make that first step and start researching, the army made there own FPS for that purpose of recruitment.

Like this guy says, My empathy is still fully functional, though I would say that perhaps the 'Shock and Awe' factor of some more grizzly aspects of life has been softened by what I have seen on the nets.

Most people are quite capable of understanding that internet play and real life are two very different things even though they overlap.

I bet people in the 20th centuary were wondering the same thing about their kids.

"These kids are inside way too much and not playing outside!"

It's rare to find kids playing outside these days, especially in upper middle class and rich neighborhoods.

But no video games only harm weak minded individuals on a mental basis. Now you being from japan (ip based) and me being a 22 year old Otaku from america...I will gladly say Japanime kills/gives my/me emotions Way more so than Shittieo games do now adays... I being a hard core gamer in the 1990's and early 2000's find gaming today to be fucking pathetic and consumer based. PC ONLY now....

Re: Do the internet and video-games, etc. kill empathy?
The internet should now be considered a full on social experience. There should be terms and conditions on every website.

It's hardening to hear the profane and violent language used day after day.

We don't pull up to a drive thru and say...gimme a fckn burger. That statement will get you a snot filled burger.

Why should we accept less on the internet than in human to human contact?

No one is infringing on free speech. Expletives can be replaced with more respectable words.

I'm just not into this vulgarity that is in abundance everywhere. It's dehumanizing and yes...it does cheapen life.

I helped an old man across a busy street the other day and then I tied his shoes. That is just one way my empathy is completely unchallenged every day of my life. Anyone who posits that they know who they are obviously isn't investigating with all the information ;-)

My point exactly. I am sure many of us here behave the same way as we would behave if we were face to face. I don't go around insulting people on the net because they can't get back at me. The internet is just a tool to stay connected.

I remember that day me and my friends were playing with our bb guns, we found a rabbit and cornered it in a pipe, shot it in the head, then took it to the woods, half alive bleeding puss from the head, climbed to the top of a tree, and threw it down from 30 feet for fun, he did, not me, yea, so much for empathy. I felt sorry for the rabbit but what you gonna do, we learnt mortality at an early age, for better or worse.

Only when you trivialize the death of innocent human beings. IMO.

Say for example, the sickos in my middle school class ranting and raving about the latest Faces of Death film.
