Description
Budapest's embrace of the Danube, which normally bisects Budapest as a gently rolling swath of silver, turned threatening on Sunday when the river spilled over its banks and claimed the Hungarian capital as the latest victim of record floods in central and Eastern Europe. An unusually wet spring has swollen the Danube, the Elbe and several of their tributaries across Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany and Hungary, forcing tens of thousands of people to leave their homes, disrupting rail and road traffic, and causing damage that preliminary estimates have predicted will reach several billion euros. The authorities in Budapest had declared a state of emergency last Tuesday, anticipating that water level would reach record highs in the north of the country. The Danube was expected to peak at 8.95 metres Sunday night or Monday morning. Hungary deployed 7,000 soldiers supported by several thousand volunteers to reinforce dikes along the river. Hungarian state television showed Prime Minister Viktor Orban at work near the city of Esztergom, north of Budapest. "The flood is approaching the heart of the country, Budapest," Orban told reporters Sunday. "The next two days will be decisive, because the danger will affect the place where the largest number of people live and the most valuables are at risk."

Description
Thousands of people left their homes in eastern Germany as a dam burst on the swollen River Elbe and swathes of farmland were flooded in an attempt to spare towns, with meteorologists forecasting more rain. In Magdeburg, one of the oldest cities in eastern Germany and a regional capital, some 23,000 people were asked to evacuate as water levels in the Elbe rose to a record 7.48 metres, around 5m above normal and surpassing the level reached in devastating floods in 2002. "We helped yesterday to carry sandbags to secure the town. The mood is very depressed and frightened because many people have to leave their homes," said resident Liane Nagen. There have been at least a dozen deaths as a result of floods that have hit Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Poland and the Czech Republic over the past week. Officials said more than 8000 people were evacuated by bus from towns and villages around Aken, south of Magdeburg. Some took their pets or farm animals with them.

A dam at the confluence of the River Elbe and the River Saale south of Magdeburg burst despite attempts to stabilise it. A dike was also breached, and a crisis unit said the high waters were likely to put further pressure on dikes in coming days. Holger Stahlknecht, Interior Minister for the state of Saxony-Anhalt, where Magdeburg is located, said air and land surveillance would be stepped up in response to a threat from a previously unheard-of group calling itself the Germanophobic Flood Brigade to attack the sodden dikes. More than 36,000 people were evacuated across Saxony-Anhalt. In Brandenburg, a largely rural state that surrounds the capital Berlin, some residents were evacuated and flooding of uninhabited areas was planned.

Extreme Weather in Czech Republic on Monday, 10 June, 2013 at 03:51 (03:51 AM) UTC.

Description
Torrential rains have caused local flash floods on some streams in central and northern Bohemia today, bringing ping pong ball size hail and inundating houses, cellars, gardens and garages, local police and firefighters have told CTK. Firefighters were called in to intervene in dozens of cases. In Prague, also hit by a thunderstorm, firefighters were called to tackle about 30 cases of uprooted trees and flooded cellars and garages, Pavlina Adamcova, Prague firemen´s spokeswoman, told CTK. In Rozmital pod Tremsinem, central Bohemia, the roof of a barn collapsed, but no one was fortunately inside, Lenka Kostkova, from the central Bohemian firefighter unit, said. The towns of Neratovice and Libis reportedly incurred material damage as a result of a storm with hailstones of a ping pong ball size. Problems also arose in Kralupy nad Vltavou and Melnik, two towns that were severely hit by flooding earlier this week, said central Bohemian police spokeswoman Sona Budska.

The centre of the Jemniky village has been inundated by an overflowing pond, Kostkova said. Her north Bohemian counterpart Lukas Marvan said most of the rain water has rushed to towns and villages from fields. In the town of Lubenec, the dam of a local pond threatens to collapse. People living in the endangered area below the dam must be evacuated, Lubenec mayor Bohumil Peterka said. The rain has made some local roads and railway tracks impassable. Since Friday, meteorologists have forecast thunderstorms and torrential rains in the Czech Republic in the days to come. The flood danger is extreme all over the country, they say. The danger is threatening now that Bohemia, the western part of the country, is removing the aftermath of the disastrous flooding that afflicted it in the past week. Meteorologists say the danger of new local floods is high also because the soil has been waterlogged and cannot absorb water any more.

Description
German authorities have urged more than 15,000 people to evacuate the eastern city of Magdeburg has flood levels reached record levels. Meanwhile, people in Budapest are bracing as the surging Danube approaches. The water level of the Elbe river in Magdeburg Sunday reached nearly 7.4 meters (24 feet), up from the normal level of two meters. The peak level was 70 centimeters above that reached during the last catastrophic floods in 2002, when the river's maximum was 6.72 meters. "We hope that the dikes will withstand the pressure over the coming days, but we can't be 100 percent sure," said fire service spokesman Andreas Hamann, who is one of 1,200 emergency staff working in the area. Flooding in Germany and across central Europe has caused billions of euros of damage and killed at least 18 people. The evacuations in Magdeburg were described as a precaution, but a city spokesman said "people really are supposed to leave" when confronted with danger. A total of 23,000 have been asked to evacuate the city this weekend.
