I have not been stopped in maybe 30 years, and even then all they do is ask you if you have any fruits or vegetables and wave you on.

Didn't read all of the replies but I have been going back and fourth from south Orange County to Vegas and have not had to stop once. They have a fruit check point thing you have to slow down at but they only check the semi trucks

About 2 years ago, we were driving from Phoenix to Coronado and were stopped 3 times. We were two white, middle aged women, wearing jeans and tank tops and driving a Mercedes station. They asked the general fruit questions at the main stop, but the next two stops seemed to be INS or Border Patrol. We were driving very close to Mexico. They did not ask to search the car on these stops but looked very carefully through the windows before letting us go. We have driven that road many times and never been stopped so often. We really couldn't figure out what triggered their interest in our car and in us. Drugs? Illegal aliens in the back seat

Yes this is true however it happened in the mid-seventies. I lived in Tucson at the time, we went to Mexico and my mother bought some fruit that we were not allowed to bring into the States because of fruit flies. Mom was hot. I am sure they did that in other places also.

I had to go through those in California with a truck, they really do not check most trucks and I was hauling medicine. One time they did take tree's out of a truck, they had them scattered all over the place. I heard that the driver had to put them back by himself. I do not know what they were looking for, I thought drugs.

Yes, there's one at the crossing from Nevada (near Reno) into California. My ex and I went through it in 2009 and they asked us about our plants (aloe) but let our dogs through (greyhounds) without a problem.

Yes.. there are checkpoints, but for the most part, they are closed due to cut backs.

In the past, they have caught pet/animals that are illegal to own as pets in CA, being smuggled in for profit. And certain fruits that were covered with Fruit Flies that are very harmful to the vineyards in CA...

So, please do not read into something that has been there for over 50 years...

I go through them all the time when heading through Truckee twice a year. They never have checked me. It is rare for them to actually check you. They check for fruits.

there may have been an alert for a car similar to yours. this happened to someone I know once (not Cali). she was driving a car similar to that owned by a missing woman. her stop was exactly like you described. like your car, hers wasn't that common of a type.

It should be no different than any other traffic stop...,"Mam/Sire do you have any firearms, illegal weapon's, or Illegal drug's in your vehicle?...", rather they should add to standard questioning...'Mam/Sir do you have any produce or other contaminated vegetation being transported in your vehicle.? When refused...then a valid search warrant issued. Really?
