All legends are based on TRUTH. There are tons of stories in old books about sailors' encounters with mermaids. Maybe the media was trying to wake some of us up by airing those movies about mermaids - "MERMAID" and Disney's "THE LITTLE MERMAID". Seems strange that so many ships used "mermaids" for their mastheads !!! I don't know.... I'm inclined to believe.  Well you're wrong. Mermaid myths came about from people not knowing what seals , manatees, etc. were.
