glossolalia: nonsense speech usually associated with religious practice. some believe it's the language of god, and usually arrises when someone has been touched by the spirit

there's no "reason" for it, it's usually considered a result or an effect of a religious experience

It was originally practiced to feel ones spontaneous unblocking nature. Similar to why people dance or play music. To be "in the moment".

Tongues are of many types and have many purposes.
A small list of the most common:

A sign of a Believer:
Mar_16:17 (ASV) And these signs shall accompany them that believe: in my name shall they cast out demons; they shall speak with new tongues;

A gift from God:
1Co_12:28 (ASV) And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondly prophets, thirdly teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, divers kinds of tongues.

A sign to Unbelievers:
14:22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to the unbelieving: but prophesying is for a sign, not to the unbelieving, but to them that believe.

A sign to the Jews:
1Co_14:21 (ASV) In the law it is written, By men of strange tongues and by the lips of strangers will I speak unto this people; and not even thus will they hear me, saith the Lord.

An utterance of tongues in church, may be interpreted, and may be a prophetic word:
1Co 14:27 If any man speaketh in a tongue, let it be by two, or at the most three, and that in turn; and let one interpret:

Or it may be a prayer of the Holy Spirit:
1Co 14:28 but if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.

Re: what's the whole reason for "talking in tongues"
Here's the scoop:
When it speaks in the bible of people speaking in tongues it is in reference to people speaking in a language which is foreign or unknown to you. One which you do not natively know or understand. Obviously the bible had a few layers of translation before being recorded in the english language...

When you see some ignorant idiot making a complete fool of themselves spouting off gibberish, now you know why.

You have to understand that people would gather to worship from many different lands speaking many languages, or tongues. They would be "speaking in tongues" as they worship.

The talking in tongues thing describes a language that will come about in the end times.
A person will speak and his speaking will be understood in every language.
Please have a look at the Tower of Babel story.
I think the Pentecostals believe all that stuff, it is just misinformation.
Gobbledygook.
All eyes from around the world are described as watching the stuff that is going to happen in Revelations.
Take this info or leave it,you choose.

Re: what's the whole reason for "talking in tongues"
Biblical tongue talking was to speak in a foreign language you do not know, thereby proving the existence of God (that's why it's called a sign for the unbelievers).

Modern nonsensical so-called "tongue talking" is done by religious attention whores with too low IQ to make up anything intelligible, whereas religious attention whores with slightly higher IQ will step forward and "interpret" their gibberish into made-up "messages from God".

Re: what's the whole reason for "talking in tongues"
Back in the old days, speaking in tongues means today multilingual. As the religious experience goes according to the book of Acts in a Christian bible, speaking a different language to the church body does no good unless it be interpreted by another so to edify or teach the body.

Lets say I know the cure for all kinds of blindness. I speak out amongst this church gathering of my methods but nobody understands because I speak bingtoowee but these people only understand English. How do I enrich these peoples lives if they don't understand?

A miracle of the Spirit is when I speak in bingtoowee and everybody understands if I spoke in English or one person interprets my speech for the others with no knowledge of speaking bingtoowee. This is explained in the book of Acts and miracles of the Spirit.

So if you see someone in church babbling gibberish, that is what it is, gibberish! Without interpretation it does nobody in the flesh any good but good entertainment and mocking laughter.

Re: what's the whole reason for "talking in tongues"
I've heard that it has something to do with a 'Kundalini' spirit, a monotonous mantra which is intended to induce a hypnotic state, usually thereafter accompanied by wild behavior, as I have experienced one unfortunate evening, while visiting a church group.

I avoid people and churches who tolerate this nonsense, who are without spiritual discernment.

'...when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.'

It's original purpose is to communicate an understandable message, not incoherent babble

This 'speaking in tongues' phenomena has caused a lot of conflict between me and my family in the past.
