and i totally agree with your last sentence, as most of what is sold as "networking security products" is actually invented by military - just think about "why" .
(of course, they have a larger budget, but ..thats not all ;))

and why is email encryption and stuff been pushed that much over the last years?
in my opinion, to make it easier to filter out who is writing:
a possibly interesting mail (the one who encrypts his mail)
and
whos writing uninteresting stuff (the one who doesn´t encrypt it, as he sees email as modern day post cards everyone can read).
