LIVE UPDATES:

4:47 p.m. The Sheriff's Office has issued a preliminary list of houses in teh fire area that have been destroyed, and those left unscathed. The list is here: [link to www.epcsheriff.com]

It is a long list.

4:43 p.m. As drivers head out for the evening commute, northbound Interstate 25 is tangled from Filmore Street to Baptist Road in Monument. Southbound traffic is snarling, too as drivers crane their necks to look at the massive smoke plume from teh Black Forest fire.

4:35 p.m. The El Paso County Sheriff's Office says the Black Forest fire is jamming phone lines in the Pikes Peak region. Deputies are asking people to use text messaging instead of calling, because it doesn't tie-up lines. The office gave a standard note of caution, though: "Please don't text and drive."

4:20 p.m. Colorado's Gov. John Hickenlooper announced he has signed a disaster declaration for the Black Forest fire, clearing the way for $5.5 million in fire funding. He also signed off for aid on teh Royal Gorge fire.

Well of course, It's rush hour and there's construction on I25. It's been really bad there for a month. I don't think it's fair to blame it all on sight seeing. People still have places to be.

Big Meadows fire has grown to approx. 500 acres. No structures threatened. 70 to 90% of the area burning is pine beetle kill.

Wait til the beetle kill in Routt county catches fire...that's going to be a big one.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 37530539

That will be a nightmare! For those who don't know this is Steamboat Springs area and last year when I went through there, most of the forest looks dead or dying.
 Quoting: whiteangel

It's incredibly bad in North Routt, back in places where you can only get by snowmobile..you wouldn't believe. I expect it to run from Wyoming to Aspen. FWIW.

They talked about it last year during all the major fires. Did a story on how bad it was and showed a video running from southern Colorado up to the middle of Wyoming with almost continuous dead forests. Can you imagine the smoke from THAT fire??

Saw it last year with the Waldo Canyon fire though by the Air Force Academy scenic over look. It was causing backups pretty bad. They had signs up saying no stopping - idiots still did. Lined the side of I-25 when the scenic pull off filled up. People have no common sense. I'm sure there's plenty that are causing major problems. No matter how bad traffic gets there I've never had time to get out and take pics lol. I guess I was just playing devils advocate because that spots been pissing me off for a few weeks now lol

I just hope it's not people who evacuated and are driving around trying to see if their house is burning. I did see several interviewed last year who were doing exactly that. One poor lady watched her house burn up from the side of I-25.

8:14 p.m. Firefighters on scanner: It's looking good to the east and to the north. "That's some of the best news I've heard all day."

8:11 p.m. Weather could help firefighters tonight. Winds are expected to calm overnight with low temperatues in the 50s, according to teh National Weather Service office in Pueblo. Night is a crucial time for the firefighting effort, when they work to contain the flanks of the fire before daytime heat and wind whip flames back up.

8:07 p.m. Firefighter on scanner:"Our line is holding good and it's really calming down."

No, as the crow flies...

- D.I.A. from Royal Gorge is some 170 to 180-ish miles to the North, North-East.

- D.I.A. from Black Forest is roughly 80 to 90 miles due North.

- D.I.A. from Big Meadow is approximately 80 to 90 miles to the South-East.

Another day in the 90's. A nice higher relative humidity in the 30-60% for the early morning hours which is a good thing for the fires. Then they drop back down to about 10% and Red Flag warnings begin earlier today at 11am instead of 2pm like it was yesterday. Winds will be higher today also. Also there is a higher chance of dry thunder storms which means more lightning and the danger of more fires starting.

Not a lot of new data out there yet but hoping for better news with the amount of water and fire retardant that was dropped overnight. Air quality in Denver Metro is horrid and the live local tv coverage in the Springs can't be more than a mile or two visibility.

Agreed. The cause of the Black Forest fire is unknown at this time but wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't caused by fireworks. The Royal Gorge and Big Meadows fires were both caused by lightning.

Fire is still 0% contained at the Black Forest fire. El Paso Sheriff's dept stated it will take at least 2 days without winds to get an upper hand on this fire.

Good morning friends,

I wasn't able to grab any additional pictures yesterday. Colorado Springs was covered in a blanket of smoke yesterday morning while the winds had died down some during the previous night.

More winds are expected to move through today, with temps in the mid-nineties. The Black Forest fire is expected to only grow today.

In addition; Black Forest is a big horse area. Many surrounding counties have opened their fairgrounds for people to temporarily house the livestock that they were able to get out.

Most of all - these folks could really use your prayers. For any who have never experienced one of the events first-hand - it is like no other event on earth.

Godspeed and God bless to all involved.

The evacuation area spans 55 square miles, which is larger than the entire Denver metro area. That should help put the size of the fire in perspective.

LIVE UPDATE: 7:50 a.m.: Refueling is underway of trucks, copters and water tankers as firefighters prepare for a pivotal day in the battle to contain the Black Forest fire.

Scanner traffic indicates a round of briefings is underway between the night crew and the day crew heading back into the fire zone.

One exchange indicated a helicopter had flown 22 sorties and needed to refuel already.
