Steven Spielberg Predicts 'Implosion' of Film Industry

Some ideas from young filmmakers "are too fringe-y for the movies," Spielberg said. "That's the big danger, and there's eventually going to be an implosion — or a big meltdown. There's going to be an implosion where three or four or maybe even a half-dozen megabudget movies are going to go crashing into the ground, and that's going to change the paradigm."

Well it's true. :|

I haven't been to a movie theater in years. What's the point. Everything produced these days is a schlock-fest. Games are the same. It's all about the explosions and the pushing the barrier shit with torture porn and bollocks. We're stuck in a creative rut.

Everyone wants bigger and better shit. Not me!

One of my favorite films was Dead Poets Society.

My favorite game is Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne. (it's where I got my avatar.)

I don't know how any one makes money anymore because the budgets are so damn big.

It's somewhat of a chicken vs. egg situation. I'm all for paying $9 or even $15 to buy the DVD if the movie is good, but I can only think of a few films that have come out since the 90's that are even worth the time to watch them.

When you have crap like this and it suppose to be funny. Nothing like feeling awkward in a full theater and everyone decides to go get popcorn and soft drinks at the same time.

"Avatar" is the highest grossing film of all time.

But adjusted for inflation, it's only about as successful as "Return of the Jedi".

Re: Steven Spielberg and George Lucas predict "IMPLOSION" of film industry...
Movies are boring for the most part these days. They have so much focus on ACTION, you don't even care about watching, because the thing that draws you into a movie is really the human drama, not watching things going boom.

My family invented the phrase "taking an action break" years ago. We were watching a movie, and suddenly there's nothing of interest going on whatsoever for several minutes, just mindless action: a lot of things blowing up and people running around. Then someone would take the opportunity to go and have a pee, saying "stop the movie if something happens, OK?". That's what we call taking an action break.

But we rarely watch any movies any more, it's just not worth the time. On the rare occasions we do gather the family around a screen, it's usually some Japanese anime, they can pack a lot more human emotion in a stylized toon than most Hollywood actors can muster any day of the week.
