Phenn, just off Routes 222 near I 78, the new road signs are even up with directional arrows! Red Route ^, Green Route>, etc. Had I not seen them myself, I probably would have hoisted the BS flag on me! Also, I've been seeing a LOT of blue flag (U.N.) military convoys rolling on the pike lately. THAT in and of itself is very bothersome to me.
Quoting: Anonymous Coward 10037931 I first heard about these signs in 1998 when my son and his dad went to NY and they saw them
They started showing up in SE PA about 4 or 5 years ago.
They are supposed to be an emergency detour system

"Q. What are Red Detour, Black Detour, Green Detour and Blue Detour signs?
A. The color detours are predetermined detours to be used in case of an emergency (crash, weather, etc) that closes a section of the Interstate."
The colors apply to direction (N/S or E/W) But let me ask this... have any of you ever had it explained?? I remember one day I was driving home listening to the radio and a an Interstate in Delaware county was closed and they were telling people which color detour to use. But that is the One and only time. You would think if this was their genius idea to alleviate traffic they would have done a better job promoting it.
The reason I did the research in the first place was that the editor of a major daily paper in SE PA, part of the chain I worked for at the time, hadn't heard about them - meaning PADOT hadn't done any promotion or notification
