The chilling pictures of suitcases left in a New York insane asylum by patients who were locked away for the rest of their lives
Photographer Jon Crispin has been documenting the suitcases left behind by patients at the Willard Asylum for the Insane in Upstate New York

400 suitcases were found in an attic at the asylum in 1995. They date from 1910 to 1960

Many of the patients who went to the asylum died there and were buried in graves marked not with names, but by numbers

I can only imagine how badly abused these people were inside these places.

thanks OP.

bumpbumpbumpfor humanity.

the first reaction to be read in the link provided:

This still happens. In Ukraine, where I do missionary work the residents don't get suitcases. If they try to escape they are caged... watch Ukraine's Forgotten Children, some of the people committed are just orphans who've aged out of the system with some sort of label attached to them. What I want to know, is how did the US finally end these sorts of institutions? What will it take for Ukraine to finally change? - NJC , Krivoy Rog, Ukraine, 12/6/2013 # # # # # NJC, I just watched the documentary on YouTube. Shocking that in today's day and age that such atrocities are still state sponsored.

So hauntingly sad. You can be accused of Insanity for any normal Human Behavior - all comes down to the Physician determining your mental health and what he/she has to gain.

Many suffered from Mercury, Lead and other chemical poisonings. Others were not shown coping mechanisms.

Humankind will never make it if we continue to withhold compassion, love and understanding from our fellow man.

A social worker tried to commit my mom just so she wouldn't have to deal with her once.

That social worker got the ultimate karmic backlash when it turned out the social worker's husband was the biggest East Coast child porn producer.

Me too baconhead. It was chilling to look at these
artifacts.
One gentleman mentioned that he wondered why the
U.S. finally gave up the practice of housing
people in these chambers of horrors. Simple.
Reagan. I guess it was the beginning of the
country running out of dough. They figured that
it was better to have home-health and group homes
than these big monstrosities that drained the
public. Cost-effective...but even now that isn't
working as many states are running out of funds
for the group homes.
There is a hotel in our town that has subsidized
housing for a number of men and women of different
situations. ONe man I talk to is HIV-positive and
in the last years of his life. He just got the word
that the subsidies for housing HERE is drying up...and
get this: He needs to find a JOB or he will lose
the little room he has depended on.

He looks like a ghost and has very little energy than
to ride a bike a couple hours of his day. The real
KICKER in this is that the SSI Services which provide
his HIV medications say they will be "forced to drop
his medication"....if he loses his housing--as they
need an actual address to qualify him for the HIV
program. (He'd never be able to afford the HIV
medicines on his own dime.)

So...there it is. I don't know how many dozens of
people are affected with this news. I know that
if they have physical (and not mental) disabilities
and are depending on help for their housing...if they
end up like my friend (who is now considering a TENT
WITH HIS 16 YEAR OLD DOG)...they will have new
candidates for "Willard" on their hands. UNBELIEVABLE.
Very sad stuff.

In our city, if a person does not have an address, the church-run homeless shelters allows people to use their address to receive mail.

Re: The chilling pictures of suitcases left in a New York insane asylum by patients who were locked away for the rest of their lives
Thanks for posting this, OP. I was struck by the "Guide to Brooklyn" pamphlet and military uniform in the one suitcase. It seems his family told him he was going on a vacation to see the sites of NYC and dumped him off at the asylum instead. How sad!

Given that he was in the military, he probably either saw something in battle or was given some experimental vaccine that resulted in his altered mental state. Who knows but given that a couple of them had copies of Books from the Bible, I pray they are in a better place than what they left!

Sometimes it greedy people. There was a case recently in Georgia where two women were charged for having their relative committed in order to take what she had. That lady was one of the lucky ones that actually found a way to prove what they did and free herself from the mental institution. Some people that get committed are kept doped up and spend years in those places because family members have lied to steal what they have.

Love or hate the Daily Mail, but they post some great stories via pictures. Where do they find these? From other sites? People send them in? Researched recently published news albums?

At least they HAD some place to house them and provide some level of 'care'.

Today, the insane just litter the streets as homeless people, by and large...

The entire mental health topic is a load of shit to start with, regardless of how one views it.

I suppose you prefer that? I don't think I would...
