WTF?! Air Force missile site south of Lubbock, TX! (updated links)
These 3 pictures show a warning sign stating that the area is US Air Force property. It also shows a mobile satellite truck and a missile battery with 3 rockets mounted. A coworker took these pics south of Lubbock near Lake Alan Henry while returning from a family trip. Anyone who knows this area knows that it is very remote, with very little in the way of civilization. The site in question is just west of US Hwy 84 off of FM 1269, near the very small community of Fluvanna. Can anyone identify what this particular satellite truck is and what type of rockets these are? And why the hell are these in west Texas?!

This is really concerning to me since I live in Lubbock. I have no idea why there would be a random missile site in this area. I am off Monday and Tuesday and may try to make a trip down to get some better pictures and maybe some video.

WTH!! Hey I1! We were just down that way last week, but didn't get off 84. Hubs is retired AF and didn't know about it. Do you know how long that's been there? I am officially freaked out now, and it takes some to do that.

I'm linking this to MM's war thread. Maybe the guys will know.

No idea how long it's been there. You can't see it from 84 since it's across the railroad tracks and over the berm. I have a few days off early next week and am seriously considering making the trip (about an hour) down to check it out. Since this area is about halfway between Post and Snyder, it is very out of the way and remote.

I know. We were too busy looking at storm damage last week. There were an awful lot of workers out there, though. Usually don't see a soul. Wonder if there was more going on than checking things out after the storm?

Wow, you're right OP what the heck is that doing there. I went to Tech and grow up around the Abilene area so this defiantly has peaked my interest. Only thing I can think of it might have something to do with Dyess Air Force Base out of Abilene might be doing some kind of training activities.

That would be a perfect cover wouldn't it? Usually, the only thing I see out that way is all the new wind turbines, scrub brush and the occasional road construction.

The dish is a satellite uplink, not an active radar system.

The Missiles are hard to judge because you can't get a sense of scale but are definitely anti aircraft. Not fat enough to be ballistic missiles.

I thought about that too. But wouldn't they put something on the sign that says "training facility" so as not to freak people out? Plus, I think the Dyess training grounds lie more to the east of Lubbock and 84. At least they used to be, but that could have changed without knowing.

They might, but I wouldn't know why. They have their own wide, open spaces. Hubs said maybe they're checking transmission equipment, to see if it works, but he has no idea either.

Yeah, they're still rebuilding the overpass down there. We saw what looked like oilfield workers. They looked like they were checking terminals and a few ranch hands fixing fences. Mostly what we THOUGHT were oil field guys. In that region, too. Near the tracks.

I looked at Google Maps satellite images of the area in question but couldn't see anything. Of course, those images could be 4-5 years old and who knows when this facility went up.

It looks pretty temporary, really. It wouldn't take much to throw up the fencing.

Very odd. The "rockets" have been there since at least 11/3/2012

Throw these coordinates into Google Earth:
32°59'00.16"N 101°09'15.99"W

*Note, in the 2012 image the "rockets" are aimed in the direction of Lubbock and it's many airports.

That "facility" first shows up in images in 2005. (however the image is bad and no detail is visible at all. Just looks like a parking lot.)

Thanks, Rabid Wolf. Doesn't sound so temporary anymore. I wonder what they're protecting out there. All that's out there are farms, ranches, oil wells, and windmills. Throw in a few very small towns and that's it. A whole lot of open space, really.

Pointed at Lubbock, huh? Well, that's certainly not comforting. not much in Lubbock to protect from a national asset perspective, I'm sad to say. Maybe it's more for Amarillo to the north and the Pantex nuclear weapon assembly plant.

If we knew what type they were, we could find the range. I wondered if it wasn't for Amarillo, too. It'd be a straight line past Lubbock airport, but much farther north.
